What on earth happened in front of the Flyers net that Gerbe got the only penalty? NBC didn't show what started that and the Flyers end up with the pp and score. Kind of an important play in the game. Combined with the non-call on the shooting the puck over the glass from their own zone and it seems like Carolina got a little screwed there. Now they tied it.

Only bad thing was they got a point. Wonder if they will start another brawl to feed off of next game?

Steve Mason has saved the Flyers from having, maybe, 4 points for the season.

I don't like the Flyers having a real goalie. Predictions, guys: Can we expect Mason to come back to Earth?

I'm sure that Buffalo/San Jose game will be a real close game. Said no one.

First line is true. Mason was terrific again tonight. I've never called an NHL game boring before, but this was about as plodding as they come tonight. It was my "primary" 7:30 game, but my "secondary" one quickly upstaged it (Mtl/StL).

The Flyers are playing so much different now, more to their strengths. The Flyers defense is slow. And they don't have all that many burners at forward either. Their wide-open style under Laviolette created a lot of spacing issues in all the wrong places and without the ability to consistently move the puck forward from the backline, well, you saw what happened in 2012-13...

Re: Mason. Remember this a goalie that was leaning on a two-month stretch to support his career to date.

Mason's first 24 career games: 14-9-1, 1.74 GAA, .939 save pct., 6 SO
Mason's next 198 games: 82-90-26, 3.04 GAA, .899 save pct., 13 SO

I posted that on 4/8/13.

Further, from the same thread.
...a lot of people say, "well, he only had one good season" but the honesty is, it wasn't even that.

2009:
November - January 9: 14-9-1, 1.74 GAA, .939 save pct. 6 SO
January 10 - April: 19-11-6, 2.68 GAA, .899 save pct., 4 SO
Now, once again, he's playing behind a fairly tight and tightening defensive system, so he's going to look fine. I mean, Emery made 14 saves to get a shutout the other night against New Jersey. 14 saves for the game. The Bruins had 15 shots about 8 and a half minutes in tonight vs. Dallas (a terrific game by the way).

Mason also had to deal with a Columbus team that was futile during a key time in his development. Now I am not a big fan of his, but he is still young and has shown he can be brilliant.

He's also shown that he can be a sieve. Not all of the goals he gave up in C-bus were because of a crappy team, let's just say that.

I wanted to piggy back the conversation about goalie fights, and took the most recent comment regarding the issue.

Goalie fights are a rarity that I think should only happen in very rare circumstances in which the goalie has engaged himself in antics that has directly caused fisticuffs that would be unanswered unless it was in a goalie v goalie bout. This most recent incident does not fit that criteria and the complete disregard for conduct was disgraceful. This wasn't Vernon or Osgood v Roy or even DiPietro v Johnson. This was an attempt for Ray Emery to do something for his team, but it was neither the time nor place for him to be engaged in a fight.

In an ideal world the local police would press assault charges against Emery, but the Philly police are going to be the last organization to do that.

Montreal is the only place that I can think of that would, assuming it was the visiting goalie that did this. MAYBE Vancouver, too?

Surprised no one has posted the picture of 3 Sabres chasing Thornton yet.

It's a special kind of absurd/failure only the Sabres can pull off.

That was a pretty pass, it's a tough play for G to make. But if you need points and you're the struggling captain, it's a play you have to make. Coaching obviously upset with it as Giroux didn't take a shift in the OT before Malhotra ended it on a breakaway (man, I didn't think I'd say that ever).
