That bear sure had it coming with being beloved and inedible and not in need of population control and all.

Did Stoner know anything about this bear? Is it possible that he just went hunting and shot it, without knowing its significance?

I don't think the temperament of the bear matters. Him trophy hunting in a forbidden area is the crux of the issue. It just happened to be a bear of significant affinity within the community

There is contention over it being an "official" non-trophy hunting area. The First Nation says it is, the provincial government says it isn't.

Since it's First Nation land, it should be their call.

And, (imho, at least) trophy hunting is stupid. If you are going to hunt, use what you kill.
