That's a lot of money for a goalie. I subscribe to Mikey's theory now that you don't have to overpay a goalie.

I thought Fleury was overpaid at $5M. Someone above had it right that Rask really had one dominant series and played ok in the Final. He basically lost in the 1st round to Toronto and has not won a Cup. Not sure how he got that deal.

I mean, its not as if Rask was an average goalie for his entire career and then had one dominant series? Rask has arguably (easily?) been a top 5 goalie in the league since he has been a starter. He has the pedigree/was expected to be a franchise netminder. I agree that the deal is a little high in that he doesn't have as long a track record as Lundqvist or others did before signing large deals and because how much more could they really have had to pay him if they had waited until he did prove himself over a larger sample size, but I don't see any problem with Rask being paid a top 5 goalie salary given his age, etc.

Wasn't this Rask's first year as the de facto starter?

That's a lot of risk, for Rask, IMO.

Rask played 45 games in 09-10, where he was effectively the starter for a long stretch. 1.97/.931

45 games is a far cry from the 55-65 an actual #1 needs to carry.

Yeah, thats a lot of dough for a goalie who hasn't played more than 45 games in a season and has only 1 playoffs under his belt. A lot of dough for a goalie who puts up very similar numbers to the goalie he's taking over for.... ie. what makes him get paid like a franchise player when the goalie in that system is interchangeable?

Put him on a pairing with your other boy Cam Barker and you have a slightly above average ECHL pairing.

I look at it very much the same way I looked at Vokoun... they have a guy that plays well when his guys play well for him, and his guys play well for him often. He didn't dominate much in the playoffs, but from the blue line back, they were better than everyone else.

If they hadn't had a miracle happen against Toronto, he would have been viewed as a complete failure, because Toronto scored often. He had nothing to do with the comeback either.

It's ok with me if Boston wants to throw a wad of cash at him. They must feel pretty secure with him, but my point is that he is not the best goalie in the league. He is around the the top 10.

Good add to the Flyers organization. From what I know, he was very important to the Kings success, a really good motivator too. If he had anything to do with finding the duo Jonathan then maybe he can bring that success too...let's hope not. Almost certainly the next GM of the Flyers when Homer is canned...

I don't want to create a special thread for this - so Rask "transacted" a Cup and some gold bling:

Dustin Brown gets an 8 yr extention with the Kings at around 5.9/yr:

Matt Duchene extends with the Avs at 6mil/yr for another 5 years:
