Filip Forsberg to Nashville for Martin Erat and Michael Latta.

Bad cap hit for his production (4.5m until 2014-15), and Caps lose their most recent first rounder?

Bad cap hit? Nah. Erat is easily a $4.5M player. I think that's a solid trade by the Caps.

Erat - underrated; Forsberg - overrated.

Wow - that's a great trade by the Caps.

Erat is one of the most underrated players around, and they have him 2 years after this.

Hopefully playing in a larger market will increase appreciation for Erat. He's really good.

Blue Jackets, along with their trade acquisitions, also get Brandon Dubinsky and Nick Foligno back from IR.

I disagree. Erat is a lot of unfulfilled potential and now 31 years old. He is not very good at all on his side of center ice and doesn't score enough to make up for getting shoved around by most average sized players. In the playoffs, he hasn't been able to step it up either. At 4.5mil/year for another two years and his age and Forsberg's upside, I'd say this was a great trade for the Preds and doesn't do a whole lot for the Caps except mortgage the future.

Maybe a change of scenery will help, but I kind of doubt it.

It seems to me the Caps are just trying not to miss the playoffs. Of course, anything can happen as we saw an 8th seed win the Cup last year, but its not like Wash is a few pieces away on paper from making a run. On the outside that doesnt look like a team that needs to give up a top 10 pick for Erat just to sneak in the playoffs.

The Caps are on a pretty good run and will probably win their division. I don't think just making the playoffs is their objective at this point.

Interesting. I know you watch a lot of Preds and my friend who is a huge Nash homer isn't really concerned about losing Erat. I must confess that I haven't watched much Preds hockey this year and last--they have perhaps the most boring personnel in the league so I find them not very appealing. Perhaps Erat has declined. I sort of view him as a well established top six guy with solid skills and effort. The Caps could use one if those and $4.5 seems about market value for that.

It helps that they are about the only team in the SE with a winning record the past few weeks.

I don't see them as having much of a chance of getting by Pens, B's or the Habs, but who knows once the playoff start? I wouldn't be surprised if they make a 1st round exit or even fall short of winning the SE.

Erat is a tease. He is a really smooth skater and skilled, but just can't put it all together. It doesn't help when you spend a lot of time playing with the offensively-challenged forwards of the Preds, but I think he's become more of a complimentary player these days and might have dropped out of a top-6 role.

If he wasn't on the Caps, Id say I'd like to see get some goals and make the most of his opportunity to play somewhere else in the NHL for the first time of his career, but oh well :)

Ah, so its Hackett, Larsson, 1st (2013), 2nd (2014) for Pominville and 4th (2014). That makes way more sense for Buffalo.

I like it. Jeff Hackett is only 44 and has a few good years left in him.

Erat is a good offensive player in a black hole for offense. I think he can be good for the Caps.

If they sent him down, even on paper, how was he able to play in the game?

They said they sent him down on paper yesterday and that it was for eligibility for the AHL playoffs.

CapGeek ‏@capgeek 13m
Sources say #Sabres will pick up 15% of Jason Pominville's contract: ~$200K in cap for remainder of this season, $795K in cap next season.
