Yeah, sounds like I'd really like this. I haven't seen it around though.eddysnake wrote:if you get a chance, pick up Southern Tiers OAT (imperial oatmeal stout), it is incredible and unlike their other blackwater series (choklat, mokah, jahva, etc) this thing has some drinkibility, not just a desert. It was easily my favorite beer at the brewery and one of the best I've had of recent, check it out. and at 10.8%, a bomber or two warms you up nicely.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
that the old man winter? i picked up a sixer after work to celebrate. i'm happy that i started reading this thread, went into my giant eagle store and saw a bunch of beers that i recognized from here. almost gave in and got hopdevil, but i wanted to try something new. not sure i could put down 6 of those anyway, that taste might get old.eddysnake wrote:picked up a case last week, I like it, different from most winters, can't quite put my finger on it.MWB wrote:Anyone had Southern Tier winter yet? What kind of taste did that Dunkel thing have?

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
my experience with dunkels is very malty... typical banana and clove flavors you get from weizens... the stronger you get, the less effervescent, and the more that the banana notes are replaced by almost a bubblegum note.
bottom line, it's probably the tastiest way to pour a 7-8% ABV beer down your face hole.
edit: that is, if you go with the doppleweizens...

Excellent. That's what I'm looking for. Prefer that to overly bitter.

Yup, that's the one. Just cracked one. Very good. Nice balance of hoppiness and malt.ulf wrote:that the old man winter? i picked up a sixer after work to celebrate. i'm happy that i started reading this thread, went into my giant eagle store and saw a bunch of beers that i recognized from here. almost gave in and got hopdevil, but i wanted to try something new. not sure i could put down 6 of those anyway, that taste might get old.eddysnake wrote:picked up a case last week, I like it, different from most winters, can't quite put my finger on it.MWB wrote:Anyone had Southern Tier winter yet? Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
Let me toss Victory Moonglow Weizenbock out there for this conversation. It's a very good one and always nice to support PA breweries.
I had a Bell's Kalamazoo Stout on draft last night. I appreciate the need for hops in stouts to help the finish and add to drinkability, but I thought the balance was off here. It's only 50 IBU so it should be fine, but it wasn't. Could have been uncleaned tap lines from an IPA or something, though. It was at Burgatory, so not somewhere you go for their beer.

Think it might have been a tap issue. Had the Bells stout tonight and didn't notice an over hop to it. Actually seemed a little mild.

Ommegang Abbey Ale, excellent trappist style ale. Not necessarily something to have when you want to just sit down for a few beers, but a great malt beverage to have with a meal or when you want something different.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
Stopped at Whole Foods earlier today.
Bell's Amber Ale - Wow, so good. so very good. Great flavor for an Amber. Very impressed.
Church Brew Works Pious Monk Dunkel - So disappointed. Tasted more like a Yeungling than a dunkel. Had that metallic flavor on the first sip. Boo.
My wife bought a sixer of Shock Top End of the World Midnight Wheat the other day. Different, but pretty good. It's 'advertised' as midnight wheat, chocolate malt, chili, and spice. I get hints of those things, but nothing overwhelming. Would love to taste this flavor combination in the hands of a micro-brewer.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
I finally found Chimay Blue, at Giant Eagle of all places.
Any idea where I can buy a wide-mouthed glass (if they were in GE I missed it)?
Also bought a 4 pack of Guinness. Not bad. Not a very "beer" taste like you get from cheap college beers.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
I had a Pious Monk a couple months back or so that was left over from a variety pack I got quite awhile ago... it actually was better than I was expecting. The one I just had at CBW was pretty meh though... Maybe a different brewer or something, but not even close to the same quality.
BTW for the hop heads, CBW apparently has a Thunder Hop Extreme right now that is supposed to be a pure Hops Assault.

Wolfgang doppelbock. Very good. I can handle the hops in doppels with good caramel/toffee.

Re: GIVE ME YOUR BEER SUGGESTIONS!!
A lot to catch up on in this thread.
Good to hear it was likely a tap line issue.
Ommengang Abbey is very good. I've yet to be disappointed with an Ommegang beer. I am anxious to try Gnomegang one of these days -- collab with Chouffe.
The Bell's Amber is pretty solid.
I've never liked the stuff that CBW bottles all that much other than Oktoberfest.
I can never find Penn St Nic Bock. Have yet to try it.
Anderson Valley Winter Solstice
I'm about to have a Youngs Double Chocolate myself.

For complex and fragrant beer, I recommend getting a couple snifter and/or tulip glasses at Crate and Barrel. Solid glasses, pretty cheap.MRandall25 wrote:I finally found Chimay Blue, at Giant Eagle of all places.

Had some Stone Lucky Bastard last night. It's delicious. It's a mix of Arrogant Bastard, Oaked Arrogant Bastard and the Double Bastard Ale. Very good stuff.
