I just don't get how all of these players are signing with the Flyers when a salary roll back is probable. Why limit your salary? Not only that, but they will most likely be traded away in three years anyway, though I guess they will be getting paid regardless. Just seems like the Flyer's do whatever they want and are never over the cap, never have to give players away, or never lose any key players. So frustrating.

That's the best part of this deal. Not surprising though. Virtually every contract has some sort of NMC that is later negotiated out.

They've been using a pretty similar model to build their team for a while now. I don't understand how it's frustrating because it hasn't worked.

What would you describe as "steady"? He has 11 seasons in the league and his career stats, projected to 82 games/year, are 21.6 goals and 46.1 points. Aside from this season, he only has 1 other season where he scored more than 49 points and/or 25 goals (his 30/30 season of 08-09). His career shooting pct is 11.3%, but he hit 15.9% this last season. Which one is more likely?

Basically, they signed him to a contract at a value equal to his career best season that he produced at 29 years old. His career numbers suggest that he is more likely to produce at a lower rate, doubtful that he could equal his peak output of his last season and very unlikely to go beyond that.

Add to that, he cites his training/fitness as one of the reason why he had his best season. Once that goes, he goes.

37 goals and 67 points gets you more than 4.75 per.

He's better than Ryan Malone, and only making 250,000 more and Malone signed his deal when the cap was like 20 million less.

This is a good deal no matter how you slice it. Saying otherwise stems only from your hatred of the organization and player

Great analysis Steelhammer, although if he stays with Giroux for any length of time he could put up pretty good numbers. But as far as throwing up in my mouth, sometimes ya just gotta ignore that stats. Hartnell is a turd with a capital T in my opinion and his stats arnt much better. Two 30/30 100pim seasons out of 11 doesnt make you a force worthy of a 6 year deal IMO.

As for the Flyers never having to trade anyone and never seeming to be in cap trouble.. when the league lets them LTIR Pronger to get that cap space back (again) this season, when he almost assuredly will never play in the NHL again, what do you expect? Ed Snider can easily afford to pay the portion of his contract that isn't covered by the insurance and Pronger of course wants the money so why would either want to retire him when the Flyers would get stuck with the cap hit (over 35 contract) and Pronger wouldnt get paid.. ugh.
