Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
the thing about so many super long deals is that eventually you're gonna have 35+ year old players past their prime carrying $7-$8 million cap hits.

You're giving these deals to players that you think are elite, looking for Lidstroms.jprolley wrote:the thing about so many super long deals is that eventually you're gonna have 35+ year old players past their prime carrying $7-$8 million cap hits.

@BizNasty2point0 Owners wants 25% roll back on salaries but are handing out 100 million dollar deals like it's going out of style. Figure that one out. #NHL

Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
i'd like to rag on the flyers here, but:
-they didn't do anything wrong or bush league or any of that. this is an honest move.
-except for bryzgalov, they haven't screwed the pooch with any of their big crazy moves in the past. i wish these things would start biting them in the A, but homer seems to always have escape routes

Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
This makes me feel really uncomfortable as a Pens fan, because if the first year truly is 26m or whatev I don't know whether Nashville has the $$ to match

Nick Kypreos @RealKyper
If #Preds match #Flyers offer, they must keep him 1 calendar yr before trying to trade him. Oh and pay him 27M in meantime. #nothappening

What's he going to do, if Pronger actually recovers?

Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
Guys, Weber is not getting $26 million up front. He can't under the current salary cap. Even with signing bonuses no player can earn more than $14.04 million. That $26 million has to be split between this year and next year on July 1 which technically means he will gte paid $26 million in less than one full calender year.
If this was the case other teams would be offer sheeting every RFA from a small team with HUGE up front costs.
Tyler Myers is set to make $12 million this year. But his cap hit is only $5.5 million. How? He had a $10 million signing bonus for July 1, 2012 to push him to the upper limit which was $12.86 million when he signed the extension last year.

Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
Nashville's defensive core last year would be better than the Flyers core this year (with Weber), AND Nashville's goaltending is leaps and bounds better than Philly's. How did Nashville fair in the playoffs?

Nashville didn't have Giroux, Hartnell, Briere, etc., up front. Bad comparison.topshelf wrote:Nashville's defensive core last year would be better than the Flyers core this year (with Weber), AND Nashville's goaltending is leaps and bounds better than Philly's. Here is a very good breakdown/scenario of the Weber offer:

Looks like the next move may actually be a trade between Philly and Nashville to work out details. Philly will need some cap relief to fit in Weber and Nashville would like some bodies back in return. I think Weber will be playing in Philly this season.

That's an interesting technique: forcing a trade.Pitts wrote:Here is a very good breakdown/scenario of the Weber offer:

While legal (I guess), that won't make Holmgren very popular.

Re: Flyers offer sheet Weber
Why would Nashville not match this? The upfront cash cannot really be an issue or, as has been said, they should just fold. They spent nearly to the cap last season and with this signing will still have work to do to get to the floor. I really doubt that they will not be able to sign him.
I think this is either:
(1) Weber wants out and believes from his negotiations that Nashville can't match upfront cash.
(2) Weber wants to stay and is using this as leverage in his negotiation with Nashville to get the upfront cash that he wants that he was having trouble getting otherwise.
(3) A block by Philadelphia to prevent other teams in the East from adding Weber by offering a deal they know that Nashville will match (with perhaps some slim outside hope that the upfront cash prevents that from happening).
