The NCAA got interested in Baylor when the murder became part of a larger scheme involving the payment of players. The NCAA"s letter itself I think refers to the murder as "an unfortunate death".columbia wrote:I frankly don't care about the NCAA angle, but it seems like there would difference in dealing the actions of a student vs that of administrators.shafnutz05 wrote:Or Baylor in 2003, when a player was convicted of MURDERING another teammate.
My gut tells me that the NCAA would be more interested in the latter....but I don't really follow these things, so that might be even remotely true.

I'm not interested enough to read that. Only interested enough to hang out here hoping to see someone irrationally bash PSU or someone irrationally defend someone.

I'm completely reversing my earlier position....the Paterno statue needs to be removed. You cannot have that horrible reminder sitting right in front of Beaver Stadium. The name on the library doesn't bother me as much, but that statue needs to go.

Interesting idea from Buster Olney:
“@Buster_ESPN: If I were at PSU, I'd want the school to create a Paterno room. Move the statue there, and tell all info w/ neutral text-- the good AND bad.”

i don't see the need for the statue discussion. it's PSU's property, their image, their decision. if they want that outside of their stadium for everyone to see, that's fine, we shouldn't care. personally, if my alma mater had this situation, i'd want it down asap, but i don't get why everyone outside of penn state really cares. it's a statue that 90% of everyone talking about won't ever see in person.

Yah, but I attend my fair share of PSU games and I know it would just be another reminder/distraction. I thought the idea to remove it was petty before, but I definitely understand it now.ulf wrote:i don't see the need for the statue discussion. it's PSU's property, their image, their decision. if they want that outside of their stadium for everyone to see, that's fine, we shouldn't care. personally, if my alma mater had this situation, i'd want it down asap, but i don't get why everyone outside of penn state really cares. it's a statue that 90% of everyone talking about won't ever see in person.

Re: Jerry Sandusky Trial
Will removing the statue somehow make people/the media not talk about what happened? I'm ambivalent about the statue, but the idea that removing the statue or nuking the program is necessary for PSU to get this behind them is a false premise.shafnutz05 wrote:Yah, but I attend my fair share of PSU games and I know it would just be another reminder/distraction. Rocco, I've been with you throughout. I just don't want it to be there, don't want to see the passing camera shots of it, etc. I just want this crap to be over.

Re: Jerry Sandusky Trial
Sure, but they're still going to talk about it. If PSU decides to take the statue down, whatever. But taking it down with the idea that somehow it accelerates the process of this ending is delusional. The media demanding the statue must come down so that PSU can move on are still going to talk about Paterno at every opportunity.shafnutz05 wrote:Rocco, I've been with you throughout. A shorter form of my question: Why does Bobby Bowden care if it's still there?

Because Paterno IIRC (if not Paterno, his supporters/surrogates) took shots at Bowden for Bobby's less than sterling player discipline record at FSU, and Paterno hung around to pass and stay ahead of Bowden.ulf wrote:A shorter form of my question: Why does Bobby Bowden care if it's still there?

It will be interesting to see if the DOJ digs into Corbett's ties to Second Mile (campaign donations) re: the speed of the investigation. Considering that every worst case scenario in this situation - despite what the kool-aid drinkers have insisted - has come true, you do have to wonder.

1. In the grand scheme of things, football is so unnecessary.
2. Why is there no public clamor for the heads of the hierarchy of the Catholic church which basically did the same thing as the "Penn State Four?"
3. Shut down Penn State football? Shut down the Catholic church. The church affected thousands more and the coverup was for decades (if not centuries).

i think the statue/library talk needs to be saved for later when emotions calm and level heads can discuss it.

this is going to blow over more than people think, imo. in a year, the statue will still be up and the large majority will be fine with it.count2infinity wrote:i think the statue/library talk needs to be saved for later when emotions calm and level heads can discuss it.

Truth be told, in the time between the initial outburst and the Freeh report coming out, it already had blown over quite a bit.shmenguin wrote:this is going to blow over more than people think, imo. in a year, the statue will still be up and the large majority will be fine with it.count2infinity wrote:i think the statue/library talk needs to be saved for later when emotions calm and level heads can discuss it.
