They already have Marchand... why do they need another guy that falls over a lot?

Zach Hamill (former 8th overall pick, IIRC) goes the other way. Fairly skilled center, but can't skate, all but a bust at this point. Bourque is an impending UFA I think. That is Ray Bourque's son as I'm sure we recall...

Noteworthy AHL deal I suppose.

Someone clear this up for me: Teams can trade again already? Besides the 2 cup finalists, obviously?

Teams not in the playoffs can trade.

I loved how the AP headline read "Bruins acquire son of Hall of Famer Ray Bourque", implying they had made some kind of great score with a promising new player with this trade. It literally made me lol.

As far as I know, and how it's been explained to me is as follows: There is no trade deadline, per se. Merely there's a date in which a player has to be on the roster in order to qualify for the playoffs. So it's a de facto trade deadline. It's almost an unwritten rule that you don't trade during the playoffs because a) GMs in the playoffs aren't interested in trading as it doesn't make sense, so you're limiting your market because there are only 13 teams to trade with instead of 29. b) you don't want to overshadow the Stanley Cup Playoffs at any time - so typically only "AHL" type moves are made...

I can't confirm it 100%, but I believe if it came down to technicalities and brass tacks, that's how it goes.

Is Providence looking to push themselves over the top?

Bourque re-signs with Boston, 2 years - the second year is one-way, surprisingly.

I wonder how much of this (the trade and 2 year contract) was pushed upon the Bruins by his dad?

Absolutely. Politics, nothing but politics. And nepotism.
