Schreibdog.com Playoff Picks
Hey all,
I've set up my playoff picks for this year at http://www.schreibdog.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Lots of LGP'ers have joined in the past and I hope you all come back again this year.
How the Playoff Pool works:
Create an account at http://www.schreibdog.com/join.php (all accounts from last year are removed so you'll need to sign up again if you joined last year) and then log into the playoff system and make your round 1 predictions (Since the NHL reseeds all of the teams after round one, I can't have an easy system to make your picks through the entire playoffs at once).
Feel free to invite friends you know that may be interested and tell them to go to http://www.schreibdog.com/join.php and sign up.
It's totally free (you can join the money pool if you want), and the more the merrier, I say...I had 50 people in this last season, and I'd like even more this year.
The homepage (http://www.schreibdog.com) will show the results once the first round begins.
YOU CAN LOGIN AND CHANGE YOUR PICKS UNTIL WEDNESDAY EVENING at 6:30PM ET! After that, the round is closed.
Scoring:
1 point is rewarded for correct round 1 selections, 2 points for round 2, 3 for round 3, and 4 for the Stanley Cup finals.
Once the following round match-ups are defined, you'll be sent a note to log back into http://www.schreibdog.com/playoffs.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and make your selections.
PM me or just reply to this thread if you have any questions.
Let the madness begin...
Pens all the way!
-----------------------------------------
EDIT:
Round 4 is now open until Wednesday 5/30 at 7:30PM ET. Make your picks at http://www.schreibdog.com/playoffs.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You can check the standings at http://www.schreibdog.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just a question - will I receive the email with the Paypal payment instructions (since I am one of the only two in the paying pool who picked Flyers, I feel pretty good about my chances... )

I'm afraid to look at the standings. I think every team I picked in the first round lost.

Re: Schreibdog.com Playoff Picks
First - a huge thanks for running this competition. It definitely adds enjoyment to SC play-offs for me. I did not have a chance - for the first time ever - to bet any money on Match Madness, and it took a lot of excitement away.
Second - a humble suggestion for the next year:
I finally checked the scoring system. From the point of view of a statistician (me ), it does not make much sense to reward later-round picks with more points. It DOES make sense to do that in March Madness, where you pick all brackets at T=0, and the chances of your team advancing always decline by 50% (on average) with every round. Consequently, you should reward correct picks for Sweet 16, Elite 8,... by more points. However, in your game, by design, every round you pick the same 50/50 "coin flip" - so it would make more sense to reward the winner of any one series (regardless which round it happens) by the same one point.
At the same time, there should be the way how to reward "skills", so here are my 2 possibilities:
a) Extremely easy scoring: give extra points for picks that advance the team already selected in the earlier rounds. That is, picking NSH to beat PHX should be rewarded more for those picking NSH in the previous round compared to those (me ) who thought DET will win the first round.
b) Slightly more complicated, but fair scoring: In the first round, let people to predict all winners for all rounds including the SC finals. The picks would be worth 1,2,4, and 8 points (for the SC winner). As long as those teams advance, people would earn points accordingly. After the first round, people will submit new picks for all the matchups they got wrong in the first round (say, I can still pick the winner of NSH/PHO series despite not picking either of the 2 teams to win the 1st round). New picks would be worth 1,2, and 4 picks (for the SC winner). After the second round, all new picks will be worth 1 or 2 points (SC winner). And, if you are picking the SC winner from the 2 teams you did not pick goint to the finals, the winner will be worth just 1 point. That way, all people can participate until the end, but those picking the correct winners earlier in the game will be rewarded more.
Use it or not - still a big thank you for organizing this!

Thanks schreibdog for running this again!
aside: man, I could have sworn I picked NJ in the East Final...I wanted them and thought they would win, I can't imagine how I selected New York. Maybe I just clicked it wrong haha...oh well...
