Famous singer Johnny Fontane, Corleone's godson, has asked for Vito Corleone's help in landing a movie role that will revitalize his flagging career. Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, had denied Fontane a part in the movie that will make him an even bigger star. Don Corleone explains to Johnny: "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."

At first Woltz denies the Corleone's overtures, but Woltz is persuaded otherwise, however, when he wakes up early the next morning and feels something wet in his bed. He pulls back the sheets, and finds

End of night 3.

The marriage between Connie Corleone and Carlo Rizzi has disintegrated to them arguing over Carlo's suspected infidelity and his posessive nature over her. One day, Sonny Corleone sees a bruse on Connie's face and she tells him that Carlo hit her after she asked if he was having an affair. Sonny tracks down and severely beats up Carlo Rizzi for brutalizing the pregnant Connie, and threatens to kill him if he ever abuses his sister again. An angry Carlo responds by plotting with the Tattaglias and Don Emilio Barzini, the Corleones' chief rivals, to have Sonny killed. Carlo again beats Connie in order to lure Sonny out in the open and away from the Corleone compound. When Connie phones the compound to tell Sonny that Carlo has beaten her again, the furious Sonny drives off (alone and unescorted) to fulfill his threat.
