What happened to Ovechkin?
You know, ever since that steroid scandal was uncovered, Ovechkin just hasn't been the same. I remember in 2007, 2008 when he was on the cusp of scoring 60 goals, projected for even more the next season. There was talk he'd be the first to reach 100 in the "new" NHL. Now, things have changed, and I can't help to think back to the summer of 2009 and the steroid scandal that sent Sergei Federov and other Capitals packing back to the USSR.
Since, we all know that Ovechkin is a class act, and we are 100% certain that he was in no way involved with the scandal what-so-ever, and would never even consider taking the human growth hormone to enhance his "Gr8" performance (to think otherwise would be preposterous), I wonder if instead the incident affected him psychologically to the point he cries himself to sleep at night over the loss of the reputations of greats such as Sergei Federov.

This should be posted on the Caps' message board.

Re: What happened to Ovechkin?
There's certainly circumstantial evidence to point to something like this:
His rapid decline in performance and being just plain out of shape and the "dealer" being connected to the Caps.
Does it add up to him missing the juice?
I doubt we will ever know, if true.

Re: What happened to Ovechkin?
posted this in another thread...
This is pretty interesting...
The Olympic year, 09/10, in the first 51 games (about 3 weeks before the Olympic break) ovechkin had 42 goals, which put him at .82 goals/game, on pace for about 67 goals, which is righ about his career high.
From that point on, he scored only 8 goals in his final 21 games, for .38 goals/game, or about 31 goals/season, which is about what he put up the season after, and isn't on pace this year to surpass.
Pretty interesting if he was using PED's. He would have had to stop before the olympics. It just seems like a pretty big dropoff. Again, not saying he juiced, but it's certainly plausible.

Re: What happened to Ovechkin?
It's kind of funny that he seems to be trying to use his unhappiness with BB to mask the complacency. I guess if you're not performing because you don't want to for your coach you hate, it's somehow better than not performing because you just don't want to try. Minimal difference, but that seems to be the line he is taking now.shmenguin wrote:steroids. fatness. complacence. the first is speculative. the others are near fact.

Re: What happened to Ovechkin?
I think Kovalchoo is a by-product of playing in a better conference. He put up huge numbers when he played 8 games per year vs FLA, TB, CAR, and WAS (before they even got good). Now he has to play PHI, PIT, and NYR. The Isles barely count as a team, but that's a huge jump up in competition level when you talk about a majority of your schedule.Factorial wrote:What about Kovalchoo?

I forgot that happened the Olympic year. Doesn't surprise me at all. I wonder what lengths the NHL would go to, to cover something like this up and preserve their image as the class sport of professional sports.

I haven't seen one in a while. And I think we can all agree that the prominence of AO everywhere for the NHL has drastically dropped off.columbia wrote:Yesterday.bhaw wrote:When's the last time you saw an Ovechkin promo for the NHL?DocEmrick wrote:I forgot that happened the Olympic year. Barring columbia's comment, that's a good point bhaw. I haven't seen a promo that focuses on him in a while.
