I need to try this
wow, that's the highest scoring beer i've seen on that site

Same here. Looks like it's a limited brewing though. I have to give the place a call and see if they have any, if they do I'm calling my uncle who lives about 20 miles from the place

I had one of these last night. I'm assume there is far more to other smoked beers?
Nothing special.
Haven't really been impressed with Stone beers overall.

Otter Creek has a Stovepipe Porter that I really like. Not sure how widely it's available though.

I'm surprised with the lack of Stone love - their stuff is usually top notch although admittedly I don't like the smoked porter. I could also see why folks who don't like hops don't like many of Stone's beer as they are very aggressive with hop additions. Arrogant Bastard, Sublimely Self Righteous, and Russian Imperial Stout are all fabulous and the stout is a standard for imperial stouts. They practically created the 'Black IPA', which Sublimely Self Righteous is - it's a re-release of their 11th Anniversary Ale.

Stovepipe Porter is a very nice porter. Not quite Edmund Fitzgerald from Great Lakes, but probably the best beer that Otter Creek puts out.

Te smoked porter is the only one I've had.
I was expecting a much more pronounced smokiness.

Right on about Stone and the hops. Don't like the aggressive hops. For me there's a fine line between good hoppy flavor and too much. Not sure I've tried the Imperial stout though.

Picked up a Harpoon Variety pack, haven't had any yet.

Drank the following brews tonight:

Troeg's Dead Reckoning Porter and Dreamweaver wheat, Lancaster four grain pale ale, Yeungling Lord Chesterfield.

The dead reckoning was the only one new to me... wasn't too shabby, but I'm not a porter guy so I can't really compare it to others. Dreamweaver is a solid wheat beer. The Four Grain was decent, not special. The LC is more nostalgic for myself and the friends we were hanging out with. It's not the best by any means, but brings back lots of memories.

All in all, a good night.

Also, before I saw the Harpoon variety pack, I nearly bought a Shock Top variety pack simply based on the reviews of the pumpkin brew... but I've wanted to try Harpoon for quite some time so I went with that.

Got a 6er of Red Hook IPA in Kroger's. Kind of weakly carbonated and almost watered down, not much of an aroma or tones in taste but not bad for a grocery store IPA.

I guess they have that one Belgian that is good.

Am I the only one who isn't too jazzed up over Sam Adams?
I mean, I like the Boston Lager....but the rest just taste like some variation on it, with the same root flavor.

Not a big fan of Sam lager, but I enjoy their Oktoberfest. They actually make a really good cream stout.

I like to cook with Sam Adams more than I like to drink it. Their beers in general are decent, but I do agree w columbia to an extent.

The Chocolate Bock (which I discovered I had a bottle left at my parents' house over the weekend) was pretty interesting. I'd never buy a full case, but it was a welcome addition to last winter's variety pack.

Picked up a Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. For those who like stouts, barrel aged stouts, or founders KBS, this is one you should seek out. Pricey, however. It does have an A+ on Beeradvocate.

According to a book I once read on the beer industry, Jim Koch is not very popular in the microbrewing world. While the Boston Beer Company does own some of its own breweries now, Sam Adams’s beer was for years was pretty much exclusively brewed under contract at various other breweries, including for a while the Iron City Brewing Company. The book said that a lot of the owners of other micros don’t view Koch as a “real” brewer because he built his company while not owning or operating his own facilities. He didn’t pay his dues, in other words.

I also heard from a friend in the wholesaling business that Koch is super eccentric and is seen as a weirdo in brewing circles.

2 questions:

Has anyone tracked down the bacon/maple/coffee porter in the area yet?

Is anybody attending Rocktoberfest at Rock Bottom in the Waterfront tomorrow?

3 beers into the Harpoon Variety Pack... and surprisingly, the Belgian Pale Ale is my favorite so far. The UFO and IPA were alright, but didn't do much for me.

Just got back from Roctoberfest. First time I've done a beer sample thing. Here's the samples I had:

Blue Canoe Bitter Ex-Wife
East End Hop Harvest
Erie Brewing Fallen Bock
Lancaster Brewing Oktoberfest
Rustbelt Peacemaker
Troegs Troegenator
