That was the most meaningful contribution from the sheriff up to this point.

One has to pay. The angry mob stands there confuzzled and not sure who they wish to kill. As the sun is setting they point fingers and go with it. Canaan’s babblings about knowing who dies and claim that he saved someone? “He protected IrishEyes!” another exclaims. Someone else yells “Who puts 'aa' together in a word other than BAA!” Sherriff Redwill calm things down. EPP and Columbia stand by the man with the badge and do their duty as citizens. The next question was how. With only the majority for the lynching, they needed to be more creative. There were not 7 people ready and willing for this to go down.

Someone had this brilliant, and completely original idea to get jaggers from the hillside and make him suffer by putting them on his body; so that’s what they do. Canaan is a strong person but can he handle the pain?? With Canaan not around to cast a tie vote to the other side, he finds himself kilt… or wait. Does he really find himself dead?... As people sit and watch his eyes close, is he simply resting or is this the end?
