I had hazed and confused at a brewfest a few years back. Dont recall the specifics but I believe I liked it.

Not a fan of Thunderhop really.

So, I tried the following beers this weekend:

New Old Lompoc - Dagda Irish Red Ale

Its an irish red aged in bourbon barrels. The most distinctive thing about all of the barrel aged stuff that I tried this weekend was the carbonation. You can hear the fizz but the taste is almost so smooth that you feel like you are drinking port or something more than a beer when you actually drink it. I really liked this beer and think it would be so good with lots of food.

Russian River - Consecration

From the brewery's page: "Consecration is a dark Belgian style ale aged in American oak Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Not only do we use Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus, & Pediococcus, we also add currants to beer while it is aging in the barrels."
This was the first true sour that I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. Oh my. Its probably one of the best things I've ever tasted. The tartness of these sours is just awesome. I don't think I can drink fruit beers anymore because I'll be looking for the sour punch. You can definitely taste the currants and the oak/wine flavor. The bottle that my buddy brought was $18 for a 12 oz. bottle, and he said he was just lucky to have found it at all.

Lodgson Farms - Saison Brett (Seizoen Bretta)

This Brettanomyces stuff is funky and awesome. They just don't do this stuff in the east coast breweries from what I've seen. Not really like any saison I've ever had. It drifts toward that sour taste but is probably more tart than it is sour. Its damn good.

Pelican - Saison du Pelican

Currently in my fridge.

I also had my first Pumking (yum) some Hennepin and tried Brooklyn Local 1

Its really good, almost like Chimay/a champagny tasting saison.

That was some serious smoke. More smoky than any smoked food I've ever had. Good experience, though. I just won't drink it regularly.

As far as the Pumpkin beers go, they're always going to have some kind of underlying pumpkin taste to them, though in some you can taste more of the spices added than the actual pumpkin. I love the pumpkin beers along with the Oktoberfest beers, so I'm in heaven with all the beers coming out right now

It is a real favorite for me. I have only tasted the Original, but would like to try the Rum Rask to, but it is always sold out.

Finally found this brewery in the PGH area after hearing quite a bit about it. This is a hoped up saison aged in oak barrels. Jolly pumpkin uses open fermentation for their saisons so they stay true to the farmhouse ale tradition - which is rare in the US. I found the beer absolutely amazing, with a nice sasion style funk and a sharp bitter undertone. I will be seeking out more of their beer in the near future.

The Russian River Consecration - I need to get my hands on that sour. Sounds amazing. Now if only I could find some Pliny on the East Coast...

Had a Troeg's Perpetual IPA. Apparently it's new? Tasted pretty awesome nice aromas and not too bitter. I like to try IPAs and there were only a few left of this type so I snagged one at Market District.

Troegs perpetual ipa is awesome - very much like nugget nectar. The hop profile is different but it's the same abv and just as delicious and easy drinking. Hoping to find it on draft soon, too.
