Cracked open my Big Vic's Imperial IPA from Elevator Brewing. Bought it all-star weekend, so it was pushing the limits of the recommended two weeks. Doesn't taste like an 8.6% nor an imperial, but it does have a nice balance of hops and a faint taste of grapefruit and something else that I can't place.

Elevator usually makes some good stuff and I try to stop by their place when I'm near Columbus. They used to make a raspberry wheat, which was a great summer beer, but it looks like it's been retired.

I think I've posted about Elevator before. Have only had 2 of their selections: Dark Horse (dark lager) and the Heifer-weizen (a banana-y hefe that was quite smooth).

Dark Horse was hit and miss for me. Had it once and it tasted fine, 2nd time it was like sour milk.

I like their other beers, so I'm hoping this will be good.
Finally opened it. I like it. Nose is a little more chocolate than coffee, but very smooth with a nice finish. That's when you taste the coffee.

Bourbon barrel evening...

Brooklyn black ops - the champagne of barrel aged beer. Because it tastes like champagne (it's the yeast). That's not a good thing. Expensive beer. Not great.

Barrel aged narwhal - very good. Not bcbs, but totally decent. Rich, slightly complex. It's regular narwhal but much better.

Going to put in another plug for this beer. The more I think about it, one of the finest IPAs I've had.

Two Brothers Cane & Ebel. It's a red rye IPA. It's got good hop presence and an almost creamy mouth feel. There's a definite fruity taste there as well. It's very complex, but it all works. Definitely a good one to try if you can find it.

One of my favorite Belgians. So damn good. Huge fan of the Delirium line.

In the battle of the weizenbocks, this time Aventinus came out ahead. Freshness of course can come into play, and I have had the Vitus for a few months now while I just got the Aventinus last weekend. At any rate, the Aventinus seemed to have just a bit more flavor, which gives it the nod this time. You really can't go wrong with either, of course.

Small chance I am making it up for that but it is a chance. It's my birthday week and the tax return came in so I may be able to convince the wife to let me come up.

I'd like to change my answer to definitely going for Friday. Saturday was sold out.

I ran across a new bottle shop today, though I had to illegally park. Pressed for time, I just grabbed a couple decent looking things:

I love Affligem. Very reasonably priced for the quality.

Never seen St. Martin's but will be looking. What bottle shop?

I could live happily for the rest of my life with no beer other than Belgian beer. If I have to expand outwards, I also like a lot of Belgian-style beers produced in other countries. :P

I'm ensconced in Belgians like Costanza and velvet. I'll occasionally venture across the border to Bockland, but that's about it. I don't even have a yen for other darks noracists like stouts.

cracked a '12 Dogfish 120 to celebrate not being a part of a recent "rightsizing".

Being that my two previous beers before the 120 were in the 8-9% range, I'm sure tomorrow morning is gonna be fun.

I'd recommend looking over the list and at least picking out the things you want to try most. Given how crazy the layout tends to be (there isn't really much logic in the way the breweries are grouped... ie. there's no alphabetical order or anything), so knowing things that you want to try is helpful if you come across that brewery.

They will provide maps, and those help to an extent, but it can still be difficult to find specific breweries.

Plus it's probably better to try the things you really want to try before you inevitably get smashed.

The Affligem didn't do much for me, but I'll definitely buy another bottle of the St. Martin Brune
