Trouba was my pick before Muzzin.

@Nyquist pick: you dirty rat. I was wondering if I was gonna be able to snipe him late. He's an excellent player.

Trouba rules.

There are definitely a few picks that I would redo in hindsight. Not getting Trouba's one of them. Chara over Duchene's another.

However, I do think the biggest knock against Trouba is he is going to be great... in a few years. Not sure how good he'll be this year, which is what the draft is. I think there are multiple defensemen not drafted yet that'll have similarly positive impact as Trouba will this year.

I wonder how much he'll prosper at Winnipeg, though. Not a lot of great mentors to learn from in that group of defensemen.

Trouba was unreal last year despite that team and his experience. If this was a different guy, I might tend to agree with you, one of those, "yeah, but..." scenarios...I truly believe Trouba is special. Stud, all-around defenseman. I think he could be a few years away from fringe Norris candidacy...not just breaking out...

Yeah, there's a lot of personal preference when it comes to grabbing guys whose ceilings are still further ahead of them than this coming year.

Guys I'd put in that group:

MacKinnon, Josi, Carlson, Skinner, Brodin, Faulk, Palat, Trouba, Nyquist. I think all of those guys have better years ahead of them.

Our player in that group (MacKinnon) stands out as going way higher than the rest, who mostly only started going recently. MacKinnon seems special, and I think possesses a high amount of "it" factor. Stamkos went from 23/23 to 51/44 in year 2. If we get that, we got him later than he would go in a re-draft of this draft.

While I agree with everything you said Krafster, my guys in that group (Carlson and Skinner) have 5 and 4 seasons respectively, under their belt already. While they certainly have even better years ahead of them, they're not at all green.

And yes, Mackinnon could be a top 5 guy in the NHL this season.

MacKinnon, Trouba and Nyquist stick out on that front to me. Nyquist to a slightly lesser extent, but still he's terrific. Wings MVP last year, postseason streak is over without him, no question.

I'm a big Elias fan. He just had a terrific season and should be a good fit on the left side of whatever line he's on. Also a solid penalty killer and brings some leadership to the table.

Yeah, that's pretty fair. I guess those guys (and Josi) fall into a bit of a different category in that I think they will have better years than they have had to this point, but for all of them, that year could very well be this year. I'd say that is less likely (or unlikely) for the more narrow group remaining from those listed.

Hey, I don't like it either, but goals is goals. And no other center in the league created more shots for his wingers than Paul Stastny. They seemed destined to be together.

Yeah, E.Kane is terrific value here, if nothing else.

Kept wanting to pick him, but he just hasn't proven (produced) enough yet to make up for other issues. Lots of potential there. Not sure if this will be his year though...

Tough to anticipate major growth from a player with limited hockey sense. Would require other factors.

I almost took E. Kane over JVR....so, I've been thinking about him for a while.

What are the other top guys on offense on that team, Ladd, Backstrom, Carter?

I don't like the way Kane fits in there.

Ladd has to be opposite him. I just don't like the combination of either of those centers between him and Ladd. Likewise I don't like any combination of those players with Carter on the wing.

Its obviously early to examine that, but I think thats why Kane fell. He'd be good on a line with 2 200 foot guys. He can definitely contribute on his own, so if he's leaching off a strong two man unit and responsible for very little then that would be how he could boost his numbers. Its just a weird situation with a guy that is undoubtedly gifted but you don't really know what to do with him.
