Prior to his demise (as you accurately pointed out, by his own men), he was considered the best civil war general. The south was noted for having far superior generals across the board.

Edit: Jackson was returning to camp when his party was mistaken for Union troops. Several others were killed also.

Right, but they played it all wrong. Had they fought in place, making the North come to them, they would've won by attrition. They wanted it quick and fast, though, and it cost them a country. A strategic blunder but that call was made above their pay grade.
