Nine automatic qualifiers for 2014 WOG hockey tournament revealed (based on the most recent IIHF rankings):

Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic, Canada, United States, Norway, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Germany (moving from the 8th to 10th place after the disappointing WC 2012 finish), Latvia, and Denmark to host the qualifying tournaments for the spots 10-12.

Not at all. Getzlaf changed direction and changed the position of his leg before contact. I thought it was pretty cut and dry.

That was just a matter of time. Finland was really coming on. Game tied.

I saw the guy jump back to avoid the hit....there was knee on knee contact, but I don't think that was Getzlaf's intent.

Well, that's that. Finland scores with 8 seconds left. USA looked like the Pens in the last 10 minutes. Puketrid defense.

last 10 ??? The whole third period they were completly dominated. I am surprised they scored a goal early in the period.

Yeah, you're right, I was just trying to give them a little more credit than they deserved. The whole third was bad.

As soon as we got that 2-1 lead, you could see us go into that damn prevent defense shell. And as we know, the prevent defense prevents you from winning. Brutal loss, especially with the goal coming with 8 seconds left.

Geno scores two, then leaves the game with a possible elbow injury.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Let's hope it's nothing serious.

Edit: He's back.

... and gets the hattrick.

Would folks be talking if Sid was at the WC and was doing great after his poor showing against the flyers?
Never, and twice not on sundays.
Go Gene!

Dr. Steve Brule ‏@DoctrSteveBrule
Evgeni Malkin is going to become the only player since Wayne Gretzky (1982) to win the Art Ross and WC scoring title in the same year.

nobody is going to shut down Geno in the friggin world championships the same way as in the Stanley Cup playoffs. these games are just an extension of the roll he's been on this year, not some "rising up and wanting it more" thing.

4-1 Russia after 2 periods, no points for Geno. Dude never shows up when it really matters.

8-) I thought he got an assist on the 1 goal. It's fun watching Gene again before hockey goes dark.
