He definitely does and there isn't anyone really close at 2nd place. For all his question marks, especially compete level, the man has an incredibly heavy wrist shot and very fast release and can score from about anywhere on the ice with it.mikey287 wrote:I've been saying for probably 5 years now that he has the best wrist shot in the league. Even in Ovechkin's prime, I maintained that Semin's was better. He just throws it into the net. It's not even fair really.

Re: Around the League: Transactions
You have to imagine that Rutherford walked up to E. Staal and said, "Yeah, so...thinking about signing Semin for 7 years. Can you deal with that?"
We know what the answer was.
Semin is 1337 in my book.

Re: Around the League: Transactions
Carolina made major moves and opened up the purse strings in getting Staal and Semin. Then the fairly reliable 2nd liner Ruutu goes out for the year and now Cam Ward. It may not be too pretty in Carolina if they fail to make the playoffs because they are known for definitely operating within a fixed budget and NOT losing money. I think that will certainly happen if they don't qualify for the post-season.
I hope they make it. I'm a fan of the Canes, their arena and city, and their fans. Rutherford is also a class GM. For years they have played a pretty wide-open style and not had the best of bluelines, so their games are generally pretty exciting

So you think Geno will be willing to make $2 million per season less than Sid? Highly unlikely.Nizzy wrote:Malkin will get 8 year, 71 Million dollar contract.mikey287 wrote:

Re: Around the League: Transactions
For the eight millionth time, the cap hits from contracts pre-lockout are irrelevant at this point. Sid averages $10.8 million per season over the first 8 years of his deal. Semin putting up a point per game and making $3.8 million less than Sid puts the deal much more in Carolina's favor when you look at the relevant financial figures.pens2005 wrote:For the first time in his career.mikey287 wrote:He's on an 82 point pace and playing well defensively.
GMs have learned nothing and we will be right back in a lockout situation once again.
He makes 1.7 mil per less than Crosby. That's a giant problem for me.

Re: Around the League: Transactions
Another thing about the Semin deal: he obviously wants to play and succeed in the NHL. Radulov headed back to the KHL with his tail between his legs and signed a 4 year deal that pays 9.2mil a YEAR. I'd say that Semin probably could have even done better if he was only looking for the highest bidder for his services. I know Radulov has dominated in the KHL but Semin likely could have got even more.
Instead of rumors of him going to sign in the KHL and other agent-stuff to drive the price up, Carolina and him made a deal pretty quietly. We'll see, but I don't think 7mil/yr for the guy is an overpayment when he's shown this year to be one of the more defensively-responsible on a Carolina team that sometimes struggles with that concept. Ther's no doubt he and Staal have chemistry and they've made Jiri Tlusty into a scorer suddenly.

Re: Around the League: Transactions
I am a tiny bit surprised that Jussi Jokinen couldn't garner something. Though he does have that $3 million tag on him next year which is the major deterrent. Might as well waive him now while there are more shootouts left. I think he'll get claimed. The timing of this corresponds directly with the Semin signing, the Canes probably couldn't move him without taking salary back and opted not to mess around. Hasn't been so hot this year compared to recent years...
GMJR knows way better than me and I'm positive he tried, but I'm surprised he couldn't find a trade partner for Jokinen.

Yeah, it's tough with the salary for next year and the roster spot right now. Especially the former, just too tough of a pill to swallow.
