Leafs forward lines at practice in New Jersey:

Kerfoot - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Lafferty - Nylander
Bunting - Holmberg - Steeves
Aston-Reese - Kampf - Acciari
Extra: Tavares
Did Tavares and ROR go shopping or something?
I believe ROR hurt his hand a few nights ago and Tavares got smoked by Myers when they played Vancouver.
Yeah, I just didn't see them on the injured list. ROR broke his hand/finger and is going on LTIR. Tavares was at practice but "wasn't feeling himself" so he was apparently an extra or did not participate.

In more Flyer news! Briere's college son pushed an empty wheel chair down a flight of stairs at a bar. The person that was using the wheelchair was in the bathroom. Good job

Kasperi Kapanen scored his 3rd goal in his 9th game for STL...a slapshot goal from the top of the right circle.

Kapanen with 2 more goals last night for STL. He now has 6 goals (and 3 apples) in 13 games with STL. He had 7 goals in 43 games this year with the Penguins.

It doesn't appear that this is just new team adrenaline. It seems like Kapanen is playing a system that better suits his style...or he's not afraid of making a mistake and getting demoted or benched.

2nd goal of the night, he received a pass before his own blue line, skated up the ice to gain offensive zone, cut across the ice to the right side and fired a wrister in the net from the right faceoff dot.

Could just be a wake up call from being put on waivers. Also, St. Louis might be too dangerous to party as much as he was known for.

Or it could just be crap coaching in Pittsburgh.

I agree but if you think about it having no competition for roster spots is going to effect someone like Kapanen who doesn’t appear to have the maturity needed to be a professional. He knew he was the 3rd line RW no matter what he did and has a guaranteed contract so what’s in it for him to improve?

I'm not really sure what to think in the grand scheme of things. Kapanen was given ample time last year in the top 6, and didn't seize the opportunity. BUT...

--I don't want to lament Sprong. We traded him for Pettersson, which was an overall win for us. I'm fine ending the narrative there. He was seen as a huge defensive liability, and while here, you could see him a bit lost without the puck. BUT...he scored 4 goals for Pittsburgh in 42 games...spread out over 3 seasons (18, 8, 16 games respectively). He scored 14 goals in 47 games for Anaheim the year he was dealt. He only had 1 goal in 8 games the next season. Then he had 13 in 43 games for WSH, and 14 in 63 games for WSH/SEA. He has 19 with SEA this year, and for the first time in his career...he has more assists (20) than goals (19) on the season. This isn't about "Oh, it was a bad trade." It's more about something I talked about previously, where the NHL has an already thin talent, and NHL coaches and GMs are pushing out guys that used to be serviceable NHL players. They want everyone to have speed/scoring/Selke ability or they are cast aside. Sprong could have been a serviceable 3rd line scoring forward for us if given some time. The problem is, Sullivan has no patience for learning in win-now mode. You better learn quick, like, in a 5 game stint in Sully's world.

--McCann was never going to score 35 goals here. But in his first 32 games after coming over from FLA, he scored 11 goals. That's a 28 goal pace over a full season. Next year, he dropped down to a 17 goal pace. The following year, he had 14 goals in 43 games, a 26 goal pace. People reemed him because he had zero goals in 12 playoff games for Pittsburgh. Those same 3 playoffs, Jake had 3 goals in 14 games. Malkin had 2 goals in 12 games. Sid had 3 goals in 14 games. The whole team stunk. McCann's trajectory went further upwards being on a team where he could get more ice time, but he'd was showing the ability to be a 22-26 goal scorer on this team and we dumped him for nothing.

--DOC has a .83 goals/60 rate at 5v5, tied with Malkin and Rakell. Essentially, that's top 6 production scoring, and DOC is doing it from the 3rd and 4th lines. DOC has put up that rate in 369 5v5 minutes. Rakell and Malkin have over 1000 5v5 minutes. DOCs scoring rate should pop a little more if he got more ice time in the top 6.

--Speaking of goals per 60, Kapanen was at .54 5v5 here with Pittsburgh. He was getting a little over 10 5v5 minutes a night. In STL, he's getting about 12.5 minutes 5v5 a night, and is clicking at a 1.11 goals per 60 rate.

--We've seen Nylander play well, yet he's riding the pine for Heinen...who has 1 goal in his past 16 games.

I still got to believe Sullivan, his system, his mindset, are impacting some of these players ability to play well here in Pittsburgh, yet move on and flourish.

Another goal for Kapanen tonight in a wild 7-5 game against the Kings. Kapanen has 5 goals and 2 assists in his last 6 games with STL. Another nice goal...Kapanen skated the blue line with the puck just barely kept in the zone, passed it down low, drove to the right faceoff dot and ripped a shot far post...similar to the goal I described above...same location, good shot.

Make that 7 goals in 14 games for Kapanen: 6 at even strength, 1 shorty.

Danny Shirey has an excellent thread on Kapanen today, and essentially says you are seeing a bit of fools gold with KK right now. He's still the same player:

--4 big differences for Kapanen with the Blues...he's shooting more (1.6 shots per game with PIT; 2.4 shots per game with STL), he's shooting just over 20% in STL (compared to being a career 11.4% shooter), and he's getting more ice time (16:38 avg TOI with STL; 12:02 this year with PIT). Other factor is, he's playing with Vrana and Buchnevich vs Carter and McGinn.

--On the flip side, Danny said while his offensive impact is better with STL, he's has a horrible defensive impact with them. KK has a xG against value of 3.48, which is worst on the team.

Says by mid-season next year, KK will probably look just as bad there as he did here.

Who is the last player to get called up and earn a spot in the lineup?

DOC finally started to see more ice time, then he went back down to under 9 minutes in 3 of the last 4 games. The guy would play well, score, and then see his icetime cut. No matter how well any call up plays, there's just no doubt that they're getting bumped out eventually. (usually for a guy that is producing less)

Not only are many not given a true chance, but even if they do play half decent, they aren't rewarded.

Keeping an eye on Matt Murray these next few days. Lucas Raymond lost his edge right after a faceoff, cutting through the crease, and essentially slew footed Murray to the ice. It was an accident, but Murray hit his head on the ice and had to leave the game. With Murray's concussion history, probably not a good thing heading into the playoffs.

Playoff time is here and Pens aren't in it.

I'm going to be mostly watching Seattle. If I can't support the Pens, I can at least support my only countryman in the NHL.

NJ-NYR series should be some real entertaining hockey on Tuesday. For Monday, got to stick with the Canes but that series is likely not too be the most exciting with a lot of Carolina domination all over the ice, except on the scoreboard where a lot of the series there will be a one goal margin late in the 3rd by one of the two teams.

All 4 of the 2 vs 3 series looks good and have some decent history and rivalries. And I think we would have had better matchups if the 7 and 8 seeds switched in both conferences. Boston-NYI, Canes-Panthers, Seattle-Vegas and Jets-Avs would all be better for TV.
