Another option is trade Guentzel. The team needs a message sent. Gotta shake up that core. You could probably get 2 good young assets for him.

-Islanders, 13 points in last 10
-Capitals, 12 points
-Tampa, 11 points
-Toronto, 14 points
-Flyers, 13 points
-Carolina, 13 points
-Rangers, 16 points

3-4-3 is their record in their last 10, which also coincides with the end of their 5 game winning streak. Tonight was game #10 since that 5 game win streak ended. The trends this season:
---3-6-0 in October
---5-0 win streak to start November
---3-4-3 since the win streak ended

24 games into last season, this team was 12-8-4, only 2 more points (28) than they have now. They had 83 goals for, 76 against. They had 13 PP goals
This year, they are 11-10-3, 26 points, with 73 goals for, 63 against. They have 7 PP goals.

So, technically better defense and goaltending...but what we thought was a lack of scoring last year is actually worse there, especially considering we had a 10 goal outburst against a horrible SJ team.

So the 3 overtime losses should have never gone to overtime with an average power play. Of the 4 regulation losses, 3 of those could easily gone to overtime with an average power play because of 1 goal losses or 1 goal plus empty netter (buffalo, rangers and hurricanes). The only real loss in regulation in the last ten with an average power play was New Jersey.

Should have been 7-1-2, 16 points. That would put the Pens second in the Metro and third in the east.

And 16 games ago, before the 5 game winning streak, we had the Anaheim debacle.

Trade is an option, but trading Jake in his prime wouldnt be.. We are trying to win in this last 2 year window.. I know Jake is expiring, but even if we re-sign him for 8M per season, that contract wont be problem to trade later down the road.

I disagree. What good are his goals doing for the team now? Do you not think that "most" of his scoring could not be replaced with good, younger, more aggressive wingers? Besides, it's not volume of goals they need. It's an attitude adjustment. Ultimately, doing a trade of Guentzel isn't so much about the scoring as it is to send a message to the rest of the team, including the core. Most of us gasped when James Neil was traded for Hornqvist. How did that work out?

The other thing is, what good is 8 years of Jake Guentzel on a team that is lucky to be competitive this year and next. Add in 13 players (including Guentzel) already with NMC/NTC clauses...this team could have set themselves up nicely to transition to the next phase. Instead they may have locked themselves into average returns with all these no movement/trade clauses limiting where they can send players down the road.

I would have moved Jake for assets already and I love Jake. Too much emotion and too much rose colored glasses thinking and not enough long term reality...this team is and has not been going anywhere for a good 3 years and should have already been real about first, retooling, which they did not when they could have, and now rebuilding, which they also largely have put off too much. This team is going to be forced into a much longer than needed and much worse than needed level of suck due to the mistakes of the last few years, but hey, the big 3 get to keep losing together until retirement so that is all that matters. Jake is the only real asset they have that would likely bring in real assets for the future. 8m a year. Good god that is beyond insane...8m is what you pay difference makers...Jake is great but he is not changing anything on this team and certainly not for 8 years. This team cannot score a SINGLE GOAL on the power play, has effectively scored THREE POWER PLAY GOALS in over a QUARTER of the season, and some people still persist in the insane delusion that somehow they are "contenders". If they could just score a few power play goals and if they could just manage to squeak into the playoffs and if they could just get a few bounces and win a round, which they have not done in over a half decade and if they could just do that 3 more times....then CUP TIME! Goodness. A whole lot of reality juice needs to get consumed. This team is not going to win anything. The "miracle" level of achievement for them at this point would be making the playoffs and winning 1 round. No realistic change that is possible at this stage is going to change that and they are only going to get worse with each passing year. Imagine a 39 year old Malkin and 40 year old Letang on this team...oh man.
