Re: Other NHL games 2014-2015 season
What team in any sport has amassed this many number one picks?
If they end up with the number 1 it'll be their fourth in 6 years. That's absolutely ridiculous.
Only team I can think of that has had that many are the Cavaliers with three 1st picks in 4 years.

The Pens didn't have all #1's , but they had two #1's, and two #2's over 4 years.
2003 -- Fleury #1(though they traded up from #3 I think to #1)
2004 -- Malkin #2
2005 -- Sid #1
2006 -- Staal #2

These stats are nice, but also somewhat meaningless.

What Neal is doing is irrelevant.
Now if the contention was that they would be worse with Hornqvist.....well, we haven't seen that.

The oilers haven't helped themselves but when you keep getting top picks and none of them are elite players, I can't totally blame them for staying in the basement. If we ended up with hall and nugent Hopkins instead of Sid and Geno, who knows where this team would be.skullman80 wrote:The Pens didn't have all #1's , but they had two #1's, and two #2's over 4 years.

He scored 40 goals in 2011.Pavel Bure wrote:Neal scored 40 goals one time!
He scored 20 goals in 40 games during the lockout season - was on a 40 goal pace.
He scored 27 goals in 59 games in 2013...a 38 goal pace but it's not out of the realm that he picked up a couple more that season as well.
So, yes, he technically only scored 40 goals in one season, but he's been consistently on a 40 goal pace for the last 3 years.

I think it's fairly safe to assume he will no longer be on pace for such feats any longer.Crankshaft wrote:He scored 40 goals in 2011.Pavel Bure wrote:Neal scored 40 goals one time!

Re: Other NHL games 2014-2015 season
The thing with Edmonton is they've done a horrible job picking up support for those first-round draft picks as well. For example, in their 2007 draft, they had three first-rounders: Sam Gagner (no longer with team, pick #6), Alex Plante (#15), and Riley Nash (#22). 2008, after Eberle, they only had a 4th-rounder. 2009, after drafting Paajarvi (now in StL, #10), their 2nd round is someone named Anton Lander. 2010, after Hall, they had 3 second-round draft picks - none of whom have touched the NHL. Same thing occurs with every other draft since.
The Oilers have had less talent at their top picks vs. the Pens, to be sure; they've also not taken advantage of their locations. Meanwhile, they sign players like Benoit Pouliot to long-term deals worth 4.5 per year.
(Edit: Taken from Wiki's list of draft picks for them.)

Re: Other NHL games 2014-2015 season
Jadedly, the Edmonton Oilers are like Vietnam...they needlessly sent a bunch of 19 year olds to do a man's job, had no support and now the bodies are starting to really pile up...it's ugly.
They keep sending boys to play a man's game, now the whole culture is toxic. The idiot GM was only qualified to do his job because he used to be an idiot coach...the coach has about as many clues as Alicia Silverstone...it's not conducive to success, it's toxic, it's frustrating as a hockey fan...
Buffalo, you see it, they're rebuilding, but they have the heat shield up...mercenaries are there to get burned up so the kids can land safely on re-entry...
You look at Edmonton, Sam Gagner got burned up and eaten alive...Jeff Schultz eaten alive...Nuge is getting eaten alive...and this poor kid, who is the second line center in Edmonton? A choice of two, Mark Arcobello (yeah, me neither...) and 18 year old Leon Draisaitl...so here we go again if Draisaitl sticks...regardless, no support for Nuge, he gets walloped by Hamhuis on hockey night and has to fight his own battle...every offseason isn't spent getting stronger and faster, it's spent rehabbing from the pounding he took the previous 6 months...and here we go, no second line center, no support players that aren't linemates...
Yakupov looks like he might finally be getting it, but once again, he was thrown into the fire and they told him not to get burned...Jeff Petry looks worse every year, and that shouldn't be the case, he's a good player. Anton Belov, clearly belongs in the NHL, walks out of the organization shaking his head in confusion...
They don't play a lick of defense - and they do have one goalie now, I'll give them that, I think Ben Scrivens is a good player...but he's not going to live much longer behind this defense...but ok fine, the kids don't play a lick of defense, but they also don't score any goals...so what is it that they do during games?
It took an Ondrej Palat mid-ice giveaway late in the third to give Edmonton their first win last night...it's just not a good situation there, the culture is rotten, the management is misguided, the coaching is clueless, the players are not developing...you can throw 3 more first overall picks in there, if you can't develop it, it won't work...

Shouldn't be that taxing, we've had this player, we know what he is...he's one of those "second tier snipers" that can be brought to life with an elite center. Lupul, Pominville, Vrbata, Perron, Ryder, whatever...

Apparently the Erie Otters are playing in Buffalo.
I'd laugh if this was to showcase McDavid to the fans, and then Buffalo loses the lottery.

Either way though, if you finish dead last you're getting a guaranteed franchise player.
