Small afternoon sampling today:
Cigar city hunahpu
Firestone walker parabola
Hoppin frog naked evil

Pretty phenomenal lineup. Hunahpu is a favorite even though it's released once a year. Parabola is just amazing. Firestone does great things with bourbon barrels.

One week until the Millvale Brewfest. :thumb:

Drinking some Penn Summer Berry tonight. Solid, but refreshing on a summer night.

Yesterday, Old Orange Brewing had for offering a firkin of their Cannonball IPA with 2 ghost chili's added to the keg. Hotter than the chili beer that Cave Creek used to offer, yet still drinkable without too much burn. A nice alternative to a personal favorite. They named it Beer Punk.

Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout (a staple)

Dogfish Head 60 minute

Three Philosophers

La Fin du Monde (the wife loves tripels)
Stoudts makes a great triple. And I just tried "brother david's", which is also pretty damn good.

how was it? almost picked it up the other day.

Went to a family reunion over the weekend, coolers filled with Iron City, felt just right, especially with horse shoes.

Working on becoming familiar with all the Sharp Edge Belgians.

Enjoy - Over the Edge, Corsendonk, Bornem and Maredsou.

Don't Enjoy - Grimberger.

Indifferent - Piraat

I have to try and get over there soon. They have the Grand Cru on draft right now, a very good sour.

I had the Stone Cali-Belgi IPA last night (basically their IPA with Belgian yeast). It was good, but try as I might, I just can't get into hoppy beers. I thought I might like this one, since I really like the Bruery's Belgian style pale ale.

shafnutz05 wrote:Awesome man!! We drank a lot of Uinta when we were in Salt Lake, and actually visited the brewery.

The Imperial Black IPA is amazing.
Looks like that will be one of the brews available:
Our friends at Uinta Brewing are kicking off our Happy Hour tomorrow with swag and delicious brew:

Hop Notch (7.3% ABV)- Loaded with a bumper crop of big hops!

Dubhe Imperial Black IPA (9.2% ABV) - Toasted, chocolatey dark malts align with an astronomical amount of hops.

See you tomorrow!

So, post visit to Russian River Brewing, I spy my unworn T-shirt bought at the place in the closet and notice a "No Randall Required" saying on the back. A search on Google as to the meaning behind the saying, and find the answer is a dry hopping vessel used before the tap. I also discover this is a device predominately used by East Coast breweries made popular by Dogfish Head. In all of my years of brewery tours and pub crawling and three visits to the GABF, I don't recall ever seeing such a device. I read that the use makes the beer turn flat.

Is the use of a Randall common at the beer places that fellow beer enthusiasts visit? Thoughts as to any flavor or hop presence enhancement?

The Erie Monster is pretty tremendous, but Pliny the Elder is a more solid double IPA.

No. I've never drank from one, but I'm pretty sure they aren't supposed to do much- safe assumption seeing as they don't use them

Dogfish pretty much takes this to all of their fests now and I think it's always in use at the Reheboth brewpub. We sampled 90 minute with fresh citra hops thought the Randall at ACBF in Boston last year - it imparts nice aroma, pretty much what you'd expect from such a short exposure to dry hops.

They do put a twist on it, many times you'll see them using cacao nibs, vanilla beans, chilis, coffee, etc., in a blend or by itself to different ales. It's more than a gimmick than anything. However, in my sample the beer was carbed fine. With the amount of dry hopping as well as just overall hop additions many DIPAs and IPAs go through (think Heady, Pliny, Kern Citra, and others) its effect on the beer is negligible.

The North Hills Mad Mex was the oddest (and very temporary) rock venue I've ever been to.
The PA sucked....but the chick pea chili was good.

I know the first time I went there the music was way too loud, but it wasn't a band. Fortunately, that has since been toned down.

the mad mex here in SC is nice. A lot of outdoor seating, great happy hour and good food, but I wouldn't suggest it during the school year. It's always packed.

Is that this weekend or next?

Edit, this weekend. For some reason I was convinced that was next weekend. I can't go.
