Just watched the Steven hawking episode about aliens.

I was talking to a friend about this over the weekend...if aliens had the technology and the energy to travel enough distance to reach us, I think they would have already destroyed their own planet before that happened.

If humans had the power to harness insane amounts of energy like that, there's no question that some yahoo would be able to harness enough to destroy earth. I would imagine that any intelligent life would consist of at least 1 being who would misuse that power.

But our other close ancestor, the bonobo, is peaceful and does nothing but boink. But yeah, I was pretty surprised when I first found that out about chimps. I thought people were one of the few vertebrates that kill their own species regularly, but I guess it makes sense that our closest relative is brutal and insane. We are believed to be somewhere between the two species, aggression wise though.

I wish there were a better way to tell what specific genes do. From what I know, they need to modify an animal to lack a gene (or add the gene to the animal), then study what exactly it does to it physically. That's a painstakingly long processes. We have the whole human genome mapped out with no clue what most of it means. (but 40% of it may be viruses )

A group of seventh-graders in California has discovered a mysterious cave on Mars as part of a research project to study images taken by a NASA spacecraft orbiting the red planet.


The 16 students from teacher Dennis Mitchell's 7th-grade science class at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found what looks to be a Martian skylight — a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars.

If we have any amateur astronomers here, me and a couple of friends from Detroit go to the Black Forest Star Party in September at Cherry Springs State Park. Cherry Springs is about a 3.5 hour drive if you take 80 and fly down back-roads like I do. It's $30 to register, $20 if you register a family of 3. We're usually the only ones representing Pittsburgh & Detroit, but there are people from all over the country and Canada that come down to it. You can either camp out on the field overnight, or just do a day trip. We usually camp, you're allowed to camp next to your car, so we have an adapter for power outlets, etc.
