Gallant claims the referee told him that Eakin "got [Pavelski] in the face with the stick," which if accurate is absolutely baffling.

Here is the explanation of the penalty on Cody Eakin from series supervisor Don vanMassenmoron:

“The referees called a crosschecking penalty for an infraction that caused a significant injury. In their judgment, the infraction and its result merited a major penalty.”

---There was no penalty until AFTER the injury. Just like their was no penalty on the Dumoulin injury vs. the Flyers. According to Don vanMassenmoron, they can call the penalty after the injury occurs. Because something must have happened to cause the injury? Doesn't matter if what happened was a penalty or not......oh wait:

Something happened here also, so where was the penalty? Simmonds hits Dumoulin 16 seconds after he shoots the puck, which (unless they changed the rules) is interference. Of course, Don vanMassenmoron doesn't really care about player safety. If he did, Simmonds would have gotten a 5 and a misconduct.

He never even looked at the net and Orpik got a piece of the pass. Disappointing. Canes have had chances to end this and failed. I hope it doesn't come back to bite them.

Canes had most of the shots but Caps had better chances that they couldn't convert. Both teams look pretty ragged toward the end and the ice does too.
