My understanding from a Leafs' fan is that not much is going on with Murray – Toronto is just using his injury as an excuse to get cap compliant. Bummer for Murray though.

I think the NHL needs to tighten up LTIR rules so teams don’t put a player on LTIR for a headache. It needs to be used for serious injuries and even a non team doctor saying it’s serious ought to be sufficient but it seems to be used for cap compliance rather than serious situations.

I think Murray is constantly "hurt" so that he doesn't actually have to play. It's the perfect scheme - he still gets paid, but never has to embarrass himself with his horrid play. Dude should retire.

LTIR is something I've considered for quite some time. Kyle Dubas was Lou's Asst GM when the Leafs played around with LTIR. Look up Joffrey Lupul. He accused the Leafs of failing him on his physical purposely. The league can have their own doctors examine him, but it can't be easy to overrule a fellow doctor. Especially with a player like Carter who had an operation a few years ago that I believe involved his back.

LTIR has been abused since its inception. It might be a longshot, but remember Marian Hossa somehow became allergic to equipment he'd worn his whole life. And his cap hit just disappeared.

I don't believe a team doctor should be the basis of LTIR since potential conflict of interest. Should be the players doctor or another 3rd party specialist. Might be hard to override but one malpractice suit could change all that (or whatever the false diagnosis suit would be, fraud maybe?). I can't imagine a doctor would be allowed to make up or exaggerate a medical condition just to help with the salary cap.

I don't know all the details, but there's an awful lot of big contracts that go away on LTIR. This is an article on Joffrey Lupul. He failed his Leafs physical and showed himself snowboarding 3 days later. Someone asked him how and this was his answer.

“They cheat, everyone lets them,” is the comment that has the spotlight on the Maple Leafs organization. It has since been deleted by Lupul.
