Looks like OEL being bought out by Canucks. Could be interesting LD for someone to acquire now that he’s a free agent.

His buyout will be on Vancouvers books for 8 seasons lol. Crazy.Pensfan4life8771 wrote:Looks like OEL being bought out by Canucks. Could be interesting LD for someone to acquire now that he’s a free agent.

Sounds like the OEL contract buyout has a recapture penalty with Arizona. Arizona apparently will lose 1 of their 3 retaining slots for 8 years. Meaning they can only retain salary on 2 players per year going forward.
Not sure why.

Didn't they already retain salary when they traded OEL?KG wrote:Sounds like the OEL contract buyout has a recapture penalty with Arizona. Arizona apparently will lose 1 of their 3 retaining slots for 8 years. Meaning they can only retain salary on 2 players per year going forward.

They did. Maybe the buyout gets added to years retained.Pruezy11881 wrote:Didn't they already retain salary when they traded OEL?KG wrote:Sounds like the OEL contract buyout has a recapture penalty with Arizona. Re: 2023 Non-Penguins Related Thread
There is no "recapture penalty" for Arizona. Arizona retained 12% of the OEL contract when he was traded to Vancouver. Arizona retains that 12 percent until the contract is finished, including if the contract is bought out. Something teams probably needed to think about a little more in this tight cap world. Having 1 of its 3 retained salary slots taken up really hurts Arizona's "business model" of retaining salary for picks, so they better draft well with the treasure trove of picks they have over the next 3 years.KG wrote:They did. It's more than that, and for 2 more years. Remember, the cap hit is spread out over VAN and ARZville5 wrote:According to Capfriendly- OEL= 146k, $2.3 mil, $4.7, $4.7, $2.1, $2.1mil.
Yikes.
23-24, 20k ARZ, 146k VAN, 166k total
24-25, 320k ARZ, 2.34M VAN, 2.66M total
25-26 & 26-27, 650k ARZ, 4.76M VAN, 5.41M total
27-28 through 30-31, ARZ 290k, VAN 2.12M, 2.41M total
OEL is going to be paid 2.4M for the next 8 years to not play hockey. Someone can probably get him for a relatively cheap contract, possibly 2M or less AAV.

Enjoying the Calder Cup finals between Hershey Bears and Coachella Valley Firebirds..
Between period 2, Grant Fuhr and Oleg Kolzig are interviewed. Fuhr must work for the Firebirds TV broadcast team, and Kolzig is a goalie coach for Hershey. Both have praise for Joey Daccord, "i don't know if I have seen a goalie handle the puck as confidently and as well as he can", and Hunter Sheppard , "not a work of art, like a Tim Thomas, Dominik Hasak; you can't define a style, nor train the style, but it works"
Both said the size of goalie is now 6.1 or 6.2 due to the size of attacking players. Fuhr said that maybe some 5.8 / 5.9 goalies are still needed.

Re: 2023 Non-Penguins Related Thread
Sometimes The Athletic can be good, other times....not so much. This one is a not so much, where 5 writers discuss potential deals for Noah Hanifin. The deals in the article were:
1) BUF send Payton Krebs and 13th overall to CGY for Hanifin and 16th overall - this deal isn't bad, but, there is a recurring theme in this article where the writers were enamored that swapping 1st round picks that moved teams 2-3 spots only was some big deal. It isn't. Unless someone is swapping like an 11th for a 6th, swapping mid-teens picks isn't really a huge asset to a trade.
2) DAL sends Collin Miller, Christian Kyrou and a 2023 4th to CGY for Hanifin - Kyrou is a top defensive prospect for Dallas, but Miller and a 4th aren't too great of throw ins. This would be like Pittsburgh offering Pickering, Rutta, and a 4th for Hanifin. Miller and Kyrou are both RD.
3) FLA sends Anthony Duclair to CGY for Noah Hanifin - Ermmm. I get it. Florida has limited resources. Calgary could use a forward, and there is a stretch here that Duclair might help Huberdeau re-find his touch in Calgary.
4) NSH sends Philip Tomasino, Jusso Parssinen, and 15th overall to CGY for Hanifin and 16th overall - Again, what's this weird desire to think moving 1 or 2 first round spots, outside of the top 10, is a big deal? The 2 NSH pieces are both centers.
5) PIT sends POJ, Ty Smith, Granlund and 14th overall pick to CGY for Hanifin and 16th overall pick. Why would CGY want 2 LD? Why would we want to give up 2 cheap LD? Moving up from 16th to 14th surely pushes this over the edge for Calgary to make the deal.

Yeah, no way Calgary does that deal with us. Maybe if the 16th overall isn't included they would have interest. But if we're going to dump Granlund in the deal, it's going to be a much more pricey deal than that.FLPensFan wrote:Sometimes The Athletic can be good, other times....not so much. I also wouldn't make that deal with Calgary, either. Not going to give up 2 young LD to get Hanifin. He's good, he'd be in our top 4, but that deal leaves us searching for a cheap LD to round out the starting defense, or leaves us with Rutta-Ruhwedel and no depth.KG wrote:Yeah, no way Calgary does that deal with us. The overall sentiment I have seen is a mid-1st for Hanifin would likely do it, potentially a 2nd and a good prospect or NHL player.

There was a funny/not-funny story going around today about Alexander Mogilny as he tries to get into NHL Hall of Fame. When Mogilny was in Vancouver and Mike Keenan was coach, players said Mogilny was not always the most motivated guy because he was just so freaking good.
I guess one night, Keenan had enough and started ripping into Mogilny. The players were like whoa, Keenan never does that with Mogilny. Mogilny reportedly looked up at Keenan and said "Mike, have you ever heard of how I defected, how they **** threatened to kill my family, how they wanted to kill everybody? You think you're **** scaring me???" Keenan just stood there silent, not knowing what to say. That shocked the players too because Keenan always got in the last word.

Steve “Dangle” Glynn
@Steve_Dangle
I’ve heard Blake Wheeler’s days in Winnipeg are numbered. Still a chance he moves but most likely option is a buyout.
According to
@CapFriendly
his $8.25 million cap hit would be $2.75 million for two seasons.

That is a great story! Brings some perspective to those of us who take hockey so seriously. Even Geno's story is probably more than most of us will ever need to go through.FLPensFan wrote:There was a funny/not-funny story going around today about Alexander Mogilny as he tries to get into NHL Hall of Fame. (Had to do a google search to see if Keenan was still alive. I guess he is and is still coaching in Italy. Wonder why no NHL teams have brought him back.)
