2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Good to see a Pen actually win a fight. Could see Imama getting called to play against the metro rivals when needed.

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
This just in...per the announcers the Pens are already eliminated from the playoffs.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Grzlyk looking good too and will be much better with Letang than Graves was. Hate we are going to be paying Graves so much to be a bottom pair barely better than Shea if he’s even that good.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Way to go old dudes!
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
HT for Geno. Sweet.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
I think Jesse mentioned the other day that Graves on a 3rd pairing with St. Ivany should be fine. Said that sheltered minutes would be good for him, but also, Graves has NEVER been a lone defender type, ie, he's not the right type of guy to stick with Letang or Karlsson to leave Graves back defending by himself.
I've also seen a few people comparing St. Ivany to rookie year John Marino, saying his smarts with the puck is very near that level.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Kelsey Surmacz of The Hockey News brought up a good point, that I'll phrase a little differently to drive it home...
If Erik Karlsson is not ready to start the season (Sullivan already claims he'll be ready for the opener), it sure would seem like giving Harrison Brunicke a 9-game tryout before going back to Juniors wouldn't be too far fetched. I'm sure he has some work to do to round out his overall game, but he's been very smooth and noticeable in a good way, going all the way back to dev camp and the rookie tournament.
Another point made by Kelsey...Larsson has looked very good in all of the games he's played to date. Really hard to envision him being sent to Wheeling with the level he's playing at. Looking more likely that Murashov could start in Wheeling, especially with him not getting into any preseason action yet.
Again, good problem to have.

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Well kinda expected for Larsson, he was best goalie in Swedish league, which is a notch below NHL,but notch above AHL.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Busy week ahead..
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Detroit is dressing most if not all of their NHL lineup tonight, so may be another tough game.

One other thing I noticed in the few times I've gotten to catch some preseason games, is I've kind of liked Cody Glass. Seems very crafty and smart with the puck, and makes nice passing decisions. Almost looks like McCann carrying the puck, and the #19 doesn't hurt either.

I have Glass as likely the best veteran pickup for the season. Lots to like. Still could be a total dud.DeHaven162 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 11:38 am One other thing I noticed in the few times I've gotten to catch some preseason games, is I've kind of liked Cody Glass. Compared to last year, we have a lot more workable bottom 6 options, and a lot less Jansen Harkins type options.Puck-Lurker wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 12:47 pmI have Glass as likely the best veteran pickup for the season. --Hayes or Eller (and maybe down the road, Glass) are suitable 3C options
--Eller, Lizotte, and Glass are suitable 4C options (so is Acciari, but I don't want to see him at C unless there is a rash of injuries)
--Beauvillier, Glass, Puustinen, Acciari, Hayes
--Poulin, Gruden, McGroarty, Broz, Ponomarev, and Koivunen could all see some games after mid-season, adding better options than Koppanen, Zohorna, etc of the past.
--Is The Great Emil Bemstrom still under consideration anywhere?
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Murashov sent to WBS for the start of their training camp.
As Taylor Haase ponders, will it be Blomqvist and Murashov in WBS, or Blomqvist and Larsson, with Murashov to Wheeling? With Larsson's play and Murashov not getting any preseason games in net, I'm leaning towards a Murashov start in Wheeling.

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
I still wouldn't be surprised to see a trade with an organization that needs a better 3rd option organizationally. Maybe a prospect for prospect deal. Could it be Blomqvist? You'd still have Murashov and Larsson in Wilkes-Barre. Although, if Jarry gets injured for a longer period of time, you'd have Ned and Larsson, probably, which isn't likely ideal.FLPensFan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 1:24 pm Murashov sent to WBS for the start of their training camp.

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
I just don't see a trade that really helps them, unless it's Jarry. I know everyone was really high on Murashov, and I still am, but, I think he came into training camp and did ok but not lights out like he was in the rookie tourney and dev camp. I think the Penguins want Larsson to be their 3rd emergency goalie type. If Jarry and Ned both went down, I think they'd recall Larsson and Blomqvist, and likely give Larsson more starts. That's just based on how I'm seeing things play out so far.dark_forces wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 3:25 pmI still wouldn't be surprised to see a trade with an organization that needs a better 3rd option organizationally. Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
I agree. I think Larsson would be a very solid 3rd organizational option, at least for this upcoming season. At that point, it's time for Blomqvist to force a decision and show he can be trusted as an NHL back up.FLPensFan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 3:44 pmI just don't see a trade that really helps them, unless it's Jarry. Lines for tonight's game:
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
I'd still love to see McGroarty get a game next to Sid. In the end, I think it will still be DOC next to Crosby. I don't think McGroarty will make the NHL roster, but, he has been getting better. He had at least two prime scoring chances last night (I didn't watch the full game).

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
That's good.
While I don't disagree with Sully there, the rest of the team can't practice with Karlsson, some of them aren't of his stature and will miss out. I'm going to read into his comments that Karlsson will likely be ready for the season opener.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
game looks to be on ESPN+ tonight.
Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Per Taylor Haase:
--Ned out week to week with a lower body injury (which means Blomqvist very likely to make the team to start as the backup)
--Lizotte has a concussion from the puck to the face. No timeline yet for return
--Ponomarev day to day with a shoulder injury

Re: 2024 Rookie/Training Camp Thread
Maybe means McGroarty and/or Puustinen make opening roster if Lizotte isn’t ready
