Penguins-Lighting Pre-Game Talk

DeSmith with the start tonight, Murray the backup.

No formal line rushes in the optional skate, but, Jon Bombulie said based on jersey colors worn, likely lines tonight are:

Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
Pearson-Bjugstad-Kessel
Simon-McCann-Hornqvist
Blueger-Cullen-Wilson

Malkin ruled himself out for this game a few days ago. Both Malkin and ZAR skated today in non-contact jerseys.
No word yet on if Schultz will play tonight.

In terms of righting the ship with effort and execution, if Sullivan isn't going to scratch guys for poor performance, then I would start manipulating ice time. If your line goes out and just goes through the motions, doesn't fight for pucks or doesn't execute well, you do one of a few things:

1) Don't take the line off the ice. Gas em. After a 2 minute or so shift, pull em off and yell at them about execution.
OR
2) Sit em. Don't play them another shift in the period. Let them know the next time they do it again, they'll sit another period. Can probably only do this with one line you deem the worst.
OR
3) If there is really one guy on a line who is dogging it, even on several lines.....sit them. Totally re-arrange the lines and let guys know if you are going out there shift after shift and not executing or not fighting for pucks, you won't play, even if it means makeshift lines that may not look right or mesh well.

This team is at that point.

Good. Bjugstad is more effective as a center. That's where he belongs. Put Kessel on his wing and leave him there if you want to roll 3 lines. Problem is Malkin needs a winger then.

If the Pens lose and Canes beat the NJ Devils tomorrow, we are out of a playoff spot. :scared:

Penguins will still have a game in hand on the Canes, but, yes, you should be scared. Since November, everyone has been saying it's only November, it's only December, we're only 2 points out of 1st, 3 points out of 1st, etc, etc.

Reality is, they are close to being out of the playoffs with 2 weeks to the trade deadline, and quite honestly, there is no indication of trending in the right direction. They are still pretty much as a team where they were back in November, with maybe better goaltending.

Have no fear GMJR has stated he likes this roster. Just wait for the switch to be flipped. :face:
