Game 45 vs Kings - Thoughts from the Morning After

Postby Penspal on Sun Jan 13, 2019 10:35 am

Pens lose 5-2 to Kings

- Back to Back on a west coast swing. Forget about how bad the Kings are, b2b against a hot goalie in Quick were the difference
- Pens were sloppy and that resulted in goals against. Pens didn't have their jump for extended periods and seemed slower than usual
- When Pens score a shorty, they usually win. When you give up a shorty, you usually lose.... Pens did both, so that's a wash. Pens need to keep embracing SHG FOR, but not against. Hiss at the cat HCMS!
- How hideous are those Kings game uni's? Worst I've seen this year, perhaps the Flyers stadium will be worse, doubt it.
- DeSmith didn't have his best game, but its hard to compare to Murray who's been lights out
- Pettersson has got to stop fighting. He's will be KILLED. The word is out, he can't fight but can be goaded into one. LEADERSHIP must see this, save this kid's career, make him stop
- Good to see Haggy, but I don't think Pens need him with Sid & Jake now on the PK. Thanks for the Cups Haggy!
- I hate these late night games.... Tuesday in San Jose, a team is riding a hot Erik Karlsson, Pens better be ready.

Mackey posted that, from 2015-2018 seasons, Penguins gave up a total of 15 short handed goals. They are at 10 already this SEASON. 18 is the post-lockout record, which they are on pace to break.

Here's a hint for Sullivan. If you are so worried about the SHG, and with 10 allowed, you should be, go to a two defenseman setup. Pretty simple. When you have Geno the giveaway machine and Kessel the no defense guy closest to your pointman, that's a recipe for disaster.

-Kings have found a formula for winning. Play all your home games five minutes after a basketball game ends.
-Easy enough to clean up this game- first goal should have been blown dead, a sloppy short handed goal and two goals because we couldn't clear the crease and DeSmith was playing deep.
- Would have been a good night to sit Pettersson. Very ineffective in front of DeSmith.
-Tough dilemma with DeSmith. His effectiveness has dropped with less games, but you can't give him more games because Murray is on fire.
- I wasn't impressed with Quick. He had some shots that he barely stopped that would have rolled in the previous night in Anaheim.
- 1-5-1 against teams in last place this year. Ugh.
-We missed Hornqvist last night. All night no one in front of Quick except Doughty and Phaneuf and company. At the other end, all DeSmith saw was the back end of a King winger.

If one of those two defensmen is Letang you still haven't solved your biggest giveaway problem.

Bad puck luck and pretty good goalie for the king's. Letang shot slid right out of the goal on a power play.
On these short handed breaks, the goalie is allowed to make a save.

To San Jose they go.

Schultz injury and Pens massive amount of SH goals are related. Letang, for all his skillset, remains one of the dumbest players on the Pens and the Pens knew that when the swapped him out for Schultz originally. I'd put Riikola in that role until Schultz comes back. His speed would be needed.

They have enough personnel for two good power play units when Hornqvist and Schultz returns.

Two defensemen on each unit would stop this short handed garbage when Malkin, Kessel or Letang try to do something creative.

But Sullivan will move Guentzel back to the second unit and keep the 4 forward approach.
