While in a case like this, the parents are probably deadbeats (I'm assuming the father is long gone), that's a horrible concept. In certain situations, no matter how good of a parent you are, you can't control if your child has legitimate mental disorders that affect their behavior and decisions. That would be way too subjective of a law.

I'm not saying that you give them the same sentence as an offender. But give them more of a public shaming or something.

I still don't like that. You could be the greatest parent in the world, but you can't 100% control your child.

Just like that kid who stabbed his class mates at Franklin Regional. By all accounts, his parents were very loving and I know the neighborhood they live in and it is a very nice place/environment. The kid just went off the deep end. There is nothing the parents could have done. I think they have gone through enough and don't need any further punishment as they did nothing wrong.

Another angle that isn't talked about is that this is only "big news" because it happened in a suburban shopping center. If When this happens in Homewood/East Hills/Penn Hills every few weeks its just mentioned in the 5:00 news.

Nobody cares that this kids are illegally obtaining guns and using them to enforce the drug trade. They care when it spills into their world.

I did. I got an underage drinking citation my senior year of high school. My parents took me to the police station and forced me into 100 hours of community service, so for the last 4 months of my high school career, I worked 10 hours a weekend and attended AA classes. I also had to pay the fine twice...once to the police, and once to them. :pop:

But they didn't get a citation, right?

No, my citation was their citation.

Would you consider is Suburban anymore? I think Monroeville Mall has grabbed a lot of the urbanites due to the city limits expanding due to economic success. I don't consider Monroeville Mall or Century Three suburban anymore.

I don't know of many "urbanites" who would move to Monroeville as a result of "economic success."

Monroeville and West Mifflin are suburbs. Not particularly successful ones at this stage, but suburbs.

I live in East Liberty, my sister just moved from Wilkinsburg to Squirrel Hill. so we both live in the city.

We have family members that think we're nuts, like the areas around Eastside and Murray Ave are rife with gang violence, muggings, drive bys, etc. Then want to know when we're going to get with it and move to a safe community.

So they're completely fine with the idea that young men are gunning each other down in the city. Just fence it off and let that behavior stay there. It only really becomes a problem when it leaves the city.

Maybe I'm not getting it, but I'm not sure if your parents are "fine" with gang violence, etc, just that they want you guys in a safer neighborhood.

I don't know about move there, I would say do business there. There's not much to go to within the city limits.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by the second sentence; there's not much what in the city limits? You're saying Monroeville and West Mifflin are burgeoning economically in comparison to the city proper?

What I think pittsoccer33 is trying to say is his parents think the city is extremely dangerous everywhere, and places outside the city aren't, which is a misconception. The only thing dangerous on Murray Ave is an Ultra Orthodox Jewish cult that drives around with menorahs on their cars around Hanukkah/Christmas. They'll run you over as soon as look at you. LOL

Ha. I definitely misread then.

I lived in Greenfield for like 4 years and it was a great place.

My wife said something akin to that equating what happened to gangs from the inner city. I said there were gangs in New Stanton when we lived there citing The Pagans. She thought for a second and agreed I was right.

The thing that bothers me is the parents provide no moral conscious to their kids and try to teach them right and wrong, parents dont parent at all anymore.

I think a lot of parents parent well, and there are also bad parents, something that has been happening for centuries.

I think every generation says the same thing you said.
