Social Topic: Men & Cologne

Postby mikey287 on Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:41 pm

Ok, so I like to use NHR to survey a group of random, but probably fairly similar to myself, people sometimes and this is one of them...

I work in an office where I interact with people all day, every day, all the time (property management). I can't gauge my own smell, I've never gotten any negative comments about it, or anything negative about it in general (and I'm pretty adept at picking up things like that, I'm very self-aware I think).

I use a body wash, it's like minty, I don't know...whatever...I'm not sure how far it takes me outside of the shower to be honest...and then my deodorant is nothing special (it's function over form really...because some types tend to give out, which is a bad time...I know which ones work and I use them).

So my question is: what's kind of the consensus on scents, colognes, etc. I know nothing really about the field in general other than too much is really tough to tolerate (and just bad form in general) and don't douse yourself in Axe unless you wear Affliction tees and live on Staten Island...

So, what's your deal...?

I work in an office of about 350 people, with I'd say about 3 to 1 ratio of men to women. I can't think of any section of the building where I have noticed an overabundance of cologne, body spray, etc. I think in general the unwritten rule is that it's frowned upon, especially in close quarters.

I don't always wear cologne, but when I do, I wear D&G Pour Homme.

Armani Code Black: deodorant stick + cologne. I think it's safe, inoffensive, long-lasting. I consider it my (work-week) daily necessity.

I just give myself a quick spray or two of Obsession, and that's it. No need to go overboard, and certainly no need to douse yourself with Axe or something similarly offensive.

I change based on the season, in the spring/summer it's more of a light citrus scent, and fall/winter I go a little stronger a little more woody. I'd tell you to go to the fragrance counter and grab a few cards and spray and smell. Eliminate the ones that smell like cat urine to you, and get a few choices, then ask if they have any coffee beans for you to sniff,or walk away for a few minutes to clear the sinus, then start over until you find one you like......OR, grab the hottest girl you know and ask her what drives her crazy and there ya' go. Remember not to let the cologne girls spray you or talk you into something. They're there to make money, and steer you to their product, most don't work for the store, but rather the cologne companies.

I wear no cologne. Ever. I am the same, shower with some dial body wash that is blue(i think the scent is "spring rain"), and deo. I think less of someone who wears cologne actually.

I prefer anti-perspirant to deodorant.

For example, I used high endurance Old Spice deodorant for a while, and I found it to be ineffective, slimy, and quickly overwhelmed if you are in a sweaty situation. Degree is where it's at.

Yeah I don't wear cologne either. I used too when I was younger I guess, but not now. I shower every morning, put on deodorant... that's good enough for me haha.

I'm a Dove for men soap (yes I have sensitive skin, deal with it) and deodorant guy. Deodorant is usually on a cycle between degree and dove. Mixing up the type and scent works just fine for me.

I wear cologne on dates and when going to weddings. That's it.

I don't even spray it on me I dab it around my jaw line and neck area

I'm actually not a fan of any cologne but I'm been wearing DG Blue as well as Angel for men

A spritz or two of Cool Water when I go out with mrs shmenguin. Other than that, I don't wear cologne.

At work, I've never noticed other dudes smelling like anything, so I imagine they aren't wearing cologne either.

Yeah, definitely don't wear it to work, going to the grocery store, etc. But if we are going out with friends, on a date, etc, all the time.

I think its a negative to smell like anything. I don't want to smell a dude, I don't want them to smell me. I don't wear cologne for the same reason that I do wear deodorant.

You think the reason men wear cologne is so that other men can smell them and they can smell other men?

I can't imagine why men wear it. To repel people? I've never heard a girl comment in a positive way about a guy's scent.

I can think of several times in the last couple of months where I've been out at a party greeting a female (with a hug or whatever), and she's commented "ooh you smell nice". You aren't going to "repel" people if you apply it sparingly.
