When I think of a wedding reception - I think it should be viewed mostly as throwing a party. Parties should not cost that much to throw. I think the linens, the chairs... all way to much. Find a venue with a few different rooms, set up a mix of regular tables, standing tables, etc. Do some food stations and some drink stations. No assigned seats - let people go where they want to go. I swear if I have to go to one more assigned seat 10 seat table wedding that makes me sit for 3 of the 4 hours while I watch a slideshow, wait until my table goes to the buffet (while the bar is closed), and then listen to 12 speeches by all the groomsmen and bridesmaids - I'm going to freak out.

Other note: unless the best man could finish top 5 in a reality tv comedy show - his best man speech should be under 3 minutes. Bridesmaids should be under 1 minute - if they give one at all. Despite popular belief - nobody wants to hear a bunch of inside jokes that arent even that good.

I feel you there. We're not doing a buffet though, and I told the caterer that everyone needs to have their food within a 5 minute window. The worst is when half of the place is already done eating and the other half hasn't even got their food yet.

Also, the best man speech.. agreed. I would hope mine will keep it under 5 minutes. And the maid of honor is the only bridesmaid that will be speaking.

So, so many comments to be made here, but I risk turning this into a paradoy of kicksave telling Dagny to "Get back in the kitchen". :)

Im picking my best man based on my beliefthat they are willing to say somethin such as. "Congratualtions you two...cheers". And then just leave the reception. That would be the funniest thing ever.

I'm getting married in April. I think our total cost for wedding/reception is going to be like 5 or 6k. Nothing is going on credit cards of any kind. We both agreed we didn't want to go in debt just to get married.

Admittedly, my best man totally stole the show. He wrote a fairly substantial (and hilarious) poem for us for his speech. Of course it was made even more awesome because most of us weren't sure he could even read :) So he was the star, of the night...until a couple of my groomsmen put on a totally overblown, drunken, dramatic interpretive dance to "I Don't Know Much" by Aaron Neville (which was the only reason the DJ didn't get axed for playing the song). Final spot on the podium for my wife's 80 year old grnadmother teaching everyone the Cha-Cha Slide.

Mine was maybe 3 minutes long at most everyone said it was great due to the fact the MOH took a 10 min speech and everyone wanted to eat.

I just got told I have an 'emergency gig' in Jacksonville Fla next week. Jacksonville is the largest ciy in America that I've never been to (I drove through numerous times, but that doesn't count in my book).

Anyone know Jacksonville well enough to make suggestions?

A buddy of mine got married a few years back. He lived with his best man for about 10 years (freshman year in college until he got married). They were also best friends growing up, etc. The best man speech went like this...

"According to PA Common Law, the groom and I are technically married because we lived together for so long, so I guess I am the first person in history giving the best man's speech at his husband's wedding. Good luck to the both of you. Cheers."

Awesome.

I did a work trip to Jacksonville...there isn't much there. There is a cool brewpub that is down on the river (River City Brewing) with some great outdoor seating.

Only place I've ever gone there is to Jacksonville Landing. Lots of bars/places to eat. Of course it was during the bowl week and NYE, so it may have seemed like a more fun place than it actually is, I dunno.
