The only thing I worry about is a repeat of 2016 where Orpik nearly killed Maatta, gor a relatively light suspension and Letang makes a borderline hit and gets suspended too only to have a sense of fairness. Hopefully no one does anything stupid tonight.

I think Sully has a good command of this team and I think he'll have them playing with the right mindset.

In my dream NHL $5000 fines are handed out like candy. If you make a careless play, even if it can't be judged as a penalty, more or less against the rules, as long as its careless, injury or not. Even that play that Wilson did to trip SHeary in that one game did the same thing to Maatta to get the winning goal. That would be considered careless. Bergeron does that a few times a season. Any slew foot is a careless play. You get a 5000 dollar fine. It just tells players we got our eye on you., we are watching you are careless and it will catch up with you. Then maybe if you get 3 fines its a one game suspension. Or if you finally do cross the line and get a suspension the league can cash those fines in and tack on games suspended. So you get a 2 games suspension with 2 fines, that's 4 games.

What really gets me and I can't understand why are players not telling the NHLPA in the next CBA we want zero tolerance for head shots. Send a message to the cement heads of the NHL we are serious about head trama and want the IIHF zero tolerance rule in place to protect the players. (which will be the NHLs argument as to why the players have damage is that they never fought for zero tolerance.)

Accidents don't happen carelessness over comes players that's when accidents happen.

So on the one hand, he's saying that incidental head shots are just a normal part of physical play and that it's incumbent upon the players to be aware of who they're on the ice with.
But on the other hand, by his own words, he's barked at refs "a million times" about getting hit in the head. Why is he barking at refs if he thinks it's a normal part of the game? Does not compute.

Maybe his faulty reasoning is the result of getting hit in the head too much.

^THIS^

If they had done their job correctly, we most likely win that game. We should have been on an extended PP. The refs have blown two games in a row now for the Pens.

** I am not someone who complains about refs either. Check my posts, I doubt there are any. But they have blown it.

As easy as it is to get mad about the blown call, in fairness the only angle where it's obvious is from the bench side of the boards. The only striped shirt with a view is taking cover because he's about to become part of the hit. The speed of the game requires video review for these hits, like NCAA football with targeting.

Thats the key. The refs huddled after the fact and obviously no one had the view they needed to make the call. They need to have the option of looking on replay. Even college basketball has a review to take a look at certain kinds of fouls. I wonder if this wont be the impetuous for such a change?

Ive always felt that the punishment for an illegal hit such as this, should often match the injury time of the injured player. That's one the way to make this stop. I guarantee you that Tom Wilson gets a talking to by Trots after the Dumo hit if that were the case.

The lack of focus on head contact is ridiculous in the NHL.

For high-sticking someone, there is an effort to determine if it was incidental (2-min minor) or drew blood (double minor or major). And at their discretion, the referees may inflict a 10 minute or game misconduct. Whether it is intentional is not the question - damage is determining factor.

For off-sides, the NHL has now instituted cameras and video review.

Why is it so hard for the NHL to not use the same criteria for head contact?
  • Rule 1: ALL head contact is ILLEGAL and must be penalized
  • Rule 2: Amount or nature of the injury resulting from head contact should be the determining factor - Minor, Double Minor, Major, 10-minute misconduct, Game misconduct, and / or supplemental discipline (suspension from 1-80 games).
  • And for Christ's sake, use video review for the on-ice officials with potential for overrule by Toronto.

It's time to take this seriously.

Exhibit A why the NHL is going to lose the concussion lawsuit.....and lose big?

“The ref just says, ‘He’s bigger than you.’ That’s the way it goes.”

That's the way it goes? Seriously? If the NHL wants to change the culture, get rid of refs with that mentality.

Yeah, I've seen others state this as well- that the fact the guy delivering the hit is 6'4 is somehow relevant to the discussion or a mitigating factor of some kind. If that's the attitude of the league, then they deserve to get hammered by lawsuits.

If rules to eliminate head shots somehow put a disproportionate burden on taller players, so be it. Cry me a river.

The NFL has done a pretty good job of policing, even though they can't get rid of them 100%, head shots. They don't care about intent, or accidental, just "vulnerable, hit head, 15 yards".

The term "accidental head contact" should be replaced with "Careless head contact" it puts onus on the player 100% to avoid it. Players don't accidentally hit someone in the head, they are careless enough to hit someone. Rarely do I think a player does it intentionally.

When Careless head contact occurs in any fashion it should be punished. The player delivering the hit should be in 100% control of where that hit lands.

If Wilson levels his shoulder and can still lunge forward without leaving the ice and puts his shoulder on ZARs emblem he would of destroyed him but it would of been legal and less injuries would of occurred.

I really don’t understand how anyone can say that that hit was through the body. If it was through the body ZAR’s jaw would be intact.

It’s insane to me that people can’t see that.

All Wilson had to do was check with his right shoulder and he would be suspended right now. Because he chose to cross body with that check he missed the shoulder and hit his head.

Yes, this notion that Wilson is just bigger and badder than everyone else and that's the reason for the injury, is just ludicrous. Ovechkin hits just as hard, I don't see him targeting the head. Why can he figure it out but Wilson can not?

Hockey should have evolved by now! It should have moved from the "goon" "hit them hard" mentality to a display of skills with the puck. If these guys would play the puck instead of the man, they wouldn't have to worry about head shots at all.
