Good deal for both sides. Just a couple more minor moves to be made, and the Pens will be ready to roll.

I was definitely worried Conor would get 4 million, possibly more, from an arbitrator. 3 million is certainly palatable and more importantly, not Cap strangling.

It's not a lot of money given his PPG. It IS a lot of money for his 105 NHL GP, IMO. I've gone back and forth on this. Part of me recognized the "get off my lawn," I must be getting old aspect of my opinion, that $3M in today's NHL isn't what it once was, it's third line money often. And part of me thinks it's a "cost contained" contract with adequate term to facilitate a trade for a meaningful player. But that requires me to suspend belief that GMs will see him as something other than a product of Crosby. I guess I am still in arbitration mindset, and once the season starts and he resumes scoring with Sid and Jake, all will be good.

Good player, could score 30 with Sid if he stays healthy all year. Production without Sid wasn't to bad. Cost effective deal for a skilled player. Keep him short term, would love to see him sign a 2nd contract with us, but if he stays productive he will price him self out of our cap. IMHO he will have a long NHL career.

I think that contract all but guarantees he will be moved.

I would agree. I think the contract makes it much more likely that he stays tan if he would have got a $4M/yr contract. If he produces the way he did last season, he becomes a bargain top 6 forward at $3M per season.

Yeah but he also is a more attractive prospect to a team now who might value him as a strong asset at 3 instead of not worth a trade at 4.

That would be so for any player and any contact. Therefore, I figure that you expect that every player that signs a more team friendly contract is "all but guaranteed" to be traded.

I feel you are just being argumentative. There is a degree of truth there, but Sheary is a different case given his limited production and possibility of him getting a very overpriced deal. In his unique case, I am not sure of his long term value and given our needs for a 3C and his now very attractive contract, I think it raises the chance of him being moved, as he is in many ways dispensable at the moment.

I wouldn't say "at the moment." Any of the Pens' wingers being expendable right now is kind of dependent on Sprong and Aston-Reese living up to their hype. I don't think it would be a shocker if either of them did not live up to their potential. They're exciting prospects but I think a lot of people are getting way ahead of themselves on those two. The Pens have been extremely fortunate in recent years to have guys like Rust and Sheary and Guentzel to jump into the lineup and make big contributions, but not every prospect is going to follow that path.

I do think it's a decent bet that Sheary could get moved before his contract is up, but that's likely going to be dependent on AHL guys forcing their way into the lineup first.

Its a perfect deal. 3 YR 3 million. If he stays highly productive he can stay and we can reap the benefits of his low cap hit. If he stinks, he is only costing us 3 million.

I think it forces us to keep him until the deal plays out. I don't see many teams going after him. He is undersized and most teams are going to think his success is tied to playing with Sid and Guentzel.

If anything he allows us to keep him for 2 years and see if Sprong or ZAR can take his spot in the top 6.
