Your Favorite 2016/2017 Playoff Moments

Postby Hugo Stiglitz on Sat Jun 17, 2017 6:24 pm

I thought it would be cool if we all shared our favorite moments from this year's Stanley Cup run.

Mine is Kunitz' Game 7 OT goal against OTT:

MAF shutting out the Caps in game seven.

Hagelin hitting warp speed en route to the ENG in the clincher at Nashville (with helpless Subban to the side), and then briefly cupping his hand to his ear as an eff-you to the crowd.

Game 4, Washington. Without Sidney. That was as tough a game as any to date. They had to win that game !

SCF Game 7 - The video of the bench when Hornqvist scored the cup winner. Pure unadulterated emotion. And my lovely spouse and I high-fiving each at the same time. I never saw her so excited.

There were a lot of great moments along the way. The one I'll watch over and over is Ellis pushing the puck around to Kunitz then failing to get back to cover Hornqvist.

Other than that obvious one was Cullen coming back to light up Eckholm in game two. We were in that end of PPG and got a great look at it live.

The last ~8 minutes of game seven vs. Washington. That was an absolute clinic of how to play with a lead. Dump, chase, cycle, forecheck, short shifts, and a beauty to watch. Watching Washington look so helpless was breathtaking.

I'd also have to say Marc Andre Fleury laughing and smiling after the puck hit the post in game 7 v. Washington was a fantastic moment.

Was that the one in which he stroked the shaft of the stick or was that when OV hit the knob from the slot?

Mine was the game 7 shutout of the Caps.

2 reasons why.

1. They eliminated the "Best Team In The League"

2. Fleury shines. Couldn't be happier for Flower

Game 2 SCF Guentzel scores 10 seconds into period 3. It was at that time I got that great feeling the Pens were winning that game and putting them up 2 games to none which made me feel like the cup was virtually a lock to be theirs back to back.

Even though we lost the game and it wasn't part of the game, being on the glass during warmups in game five at the Verizon Center - the roar from the Pens fans when Sid hit the ice, coming back from the concussion. It was also funny watching Cole pin Kuhnhackl against the glass and giving him some cross checks - and then Fleury skated over and finished off Kuhnhackl with a pretty solid check into the glass.

As for the playoffs overall, maybe my favorite moment was seeing Hagelin shot out of a cannon to get the empty netter in the final game. Just knowing that the Pens actually pulled it off at that moment, that was something...

The Hornqvist goal against the Caps, game 7. The dagger that killed the Capitals.

The first period of SCF game 5, all of it. Sid splits the D, hits the post and draws the penalty. The puck movement on the PP that opened up space for Schultz to score the PPG. The slick backhand by Rust after a beautiful feed from Kunitz. Malkin's blast with 10 seconds left in the period to seal the game.

Highlights!

A trio of hits:
Dumoulin putting Oven-chicken on his backside.
Hainsey with a hit against NSH (if I recall correctly) while on the PK.
Kunitz without a stick forces the puck out of his zone with the body.

All of the 6-0 party against NSH.

Kunitz series winner against Ottawa.

Määttä bats a puck out of goal R1G5 at 0-0

Crosby with an unbelievable snipe R1G5 against CBJ for 4-2. His puck handling for the assist in R2G2 against WSH for the 2-1.

Bonino sacrificing the body, meaning the end of his season, back for the handshake line though in visible pain.

Crosby hugging PK Soup-Pan on the ice. Even though he should've been called for second dribble.

Guentzel's key-hole goal against NSH and all of the others. Goaltzel.

Kessel for a huge number of goals and great passes. Málkin for the same.

Hörnqvist for the "garbage goal" and SCWG.

HCMS dodging sticks behind the bench in SCF G6.

But my absolute favourite?

NSH #76, the highly praised PK Soup-Pan trying to keep up with PIT #62, Carl Highspeed Hagelin. PK starts a few feet off the blue line, Hags is coming from between the PIT faceoff circles. Within two seconds, Hagelin has already beaten Subban for speed and they're not even past the center line. Love how #76 flails his stick for a backcheck, while Hags is several strides beyond his reach already.

Wilson's no look goal!
Scoring 2 in minutes to force OT v Holtby!
Can this line be saved drama, Phil and Gene! Then Phil gets a goal.
Screwing with the analytics by winning game 1 despite the 37 mins paused mode!
Sid getting out 12 years' of frustration, for 40 seconds on 76 in final game 5!
Hainsey with a Stanley Cup final goal and many caps have 0!
My favorite quirky memories!

Bucci Mane‏Verified account @Buccigross Jun 12
Evgeni Malkin led playoffs in points (28) & penalty minutes (53). 1st to do that since Maurice Richard in 1947. #elias

Evgeni playing end to end- constant, game in and out. With the points, played as I remember the great
Sergei Federov with the wings. Only better. Gene is fast approaching the most accomplished russian player.

I always seem to fondly recall a "moment" from the cup finals in each year the pens win as a defining moment.

1991 - Mario's end to end against Minnesota
1992 - Jagr's slick moves to tie game 1 against Chicago
2009 - MAF's diving save on Lidstrom as time expires
2016 - Letang's amazing play and pass to the tape of Bonino's stick for the late go-ahead goal in game 1
2017 - Guenztel's snipe goal after the 37-minute break in shots that gave the pens the go-ahead goal in game 1

I bought MAF and Letang jersey's with cup patches...so I guess I will have to buy a Guentzel jersey with a patch :P

I got really pumped when the old D-men turned into playmakers. Streit with the beautiful assist versus Sens. Hainsey turning into a running back, causing two Preds to smash into each other, then hustling all the way down to knock the Malkin pass into the net versus the Preds.

Although probably no coincidence those two events occurred in games with a combined score of 13-0.

What a hard choice to make!

I really liked the Pens sending the Caps home empty handed - again!

The most anxious one was Game 7 2OT against the Sens. The game hung on a knife edge and traditionally the Pens have not fared well in those games. But Kunitz's goal from Crosby was sweeeet!!!! :fist:

Probably when Haggy scored the empty netter and raised his arms. After months of battling, this was it!

I was also so proud of the way the team rallied together when Crosby went down from Niskanen's cross check, and Mario's fist pump for the Schultz game winning goal in game 4. You know he wanted that game, badly. Phil calling Beagle an idiot. The Penguins had hearts of champions and the Caps just ended up looking like a bunch of chumps.

When Sid went down, people thought he was looking at his trainer, but he was looking over at Geno who came out to check on him when he went down.
