What were you doing when you were 19-years-old? Were you on your own, halfway around the world, speaking a foreign language, and competing against people twice your age and the highest levels of your profession in the world?

Well, that’s exactly the life of 19-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins rookie defenseman Olli Maatta, who has been too busy playing hockey to explore the city.

KDKA-TV’s Jory Rand recently took Maatta around town to get to know Maatta.

He's been in London, Ontario though for the previous two years so Pittsburgh can't be that much of a culture shock.

Well Jory, when I was 19 I was in the middle of the ocean or in a foreign land training people twice my age on small arms weapons.

What an engaging young man! We’ve come to know Olli the hockey player, but it’s so nice to now know a little more about Olli the person. Thanks for posting the link.

At 19 I was on my own, halfway around the world, speaking a foreign language - in the military. Cool article.

Methinks that when the Pens make the playoffs this year we may not even know whether or not Olli is growing (or trying to grow) a beard. Does he even shave yet? :pop:
