I agree...Cannot stand Clarkson...

Side note: Today's game proves that maata and bortuzzo should stay a pair.

To be fair, it isn't really an "old guy injury." Just a freak play. (Or Clarkson's dirty.)

Typically....you'd rather have a broken ankle than a high ankle sprain. Those keep you out 4-6 weeks then linger for the rest of the season. You're never at full strength until the offseason. Broken ankle can be fixed and you heal to 100% and move on. No lingering issues. Hopefully 1-2 months and then he's back. All good for the playoffs is all that matters.

Call me crazy, but is a broken ankle actually not as bad as a high ankle sprain?

Not the kind that needs surgery. A simple fracture would be a good thing, but.... this is bad.

Been saying this all along. Cap compliant, injuries WILL occur, why move someone you will need soon?

Did you see Rossi's tweet? Because he said in it the broken ankle wasn't as bad as a high ankle sprain.

As someone has already mentioned, when you need surgery, it's bad.

seriously, players are going to stop wanting to sign with the Pens if this crap keeps up. This team is where players come to get LTIR'd......

Sounds like a good place that someone like Chris Stewart would like to finish out his career.

While I don't know what is true in Scuderi's specific case, I do know that medical advancements make that conventional "surgery means its really bad" thinking not necessarily true anymore.

For example, I just broke my wrist last year. I figured it'd be the same old "set it, cast it, wait". But instead, when the dr explained to me how surgery would actually go vs set and cast, and how i would get use of my wrist back much sooner if i opted for surgery with no cast, I went with surgery.

Again, it may be true that it could be worse. But with today's medical technology it doesn't necessarily have to be.

It's a shame, Scuderi should have been on the Olympic team but this will definitely destroy that chance.

Somewhat related...Calgary Flame Mark Giordano just broke his ankle. The timetable the team put on recovery was 6-8 weeks.

Scuderi wasn't brought here for November or December. He was brought her the the playoffs. This isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things as long as he can come back 2 months or so.

Maybe a blessing in disguise that Maatta, Bortuzzo, and others get to rack up minutes and gain experience. By the time he gets back they'll be better for it.

Tissue healing time reference

Bone 6 weeks
Muscle 6-8 weeks
Ligament 8-12 weeks maybe longer depending on blood supply to ligament.

Cartilage most times unable to be healed without surgery.

Broken bones aren't always better. Depends on type of fracture and location of fx and age of individual. Many different types of fractures.
