Despres giving Pens more options

Postby bse on Sat Sep 14, 2013 5:54 am

Josh Yohe commented on Twitter that Despres looked visibly out of shape.
Dejan Kovacevik also said he looks shamefully out of shape.
Brian Metzer also echoed the sentiment.

Yohe commented later that Despres still played well in a scrimmage though.

But anyway, given the pile of bodies and cap problems we have, wouldn't it be best for all parties involved if Simon Despres is sent to minors?
That could potentially open a spot for a guy like Brian Dumoulin and/or give a chance to sign Chuck Kobasew while also helping us retain Matt Niskanen.

Such a scenario wouldn't hurt Despres' development one bit. Might actually accelerate it, all the while making Jason Botteril's job easier. Botteril by the way, has commented that Pens have more cap space than is publicly known.

= So, a lot has been made – starting with this report: http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/468 ... z2esh8bjAv – about D Simon Despres during this camp. Some are fair, but one is not.
Indeed, Despres lagged behind during skating drills on Day 1, but his slowness was not due to being out of shape. In fact, coaches view him as being in the best shape of his young NHL career.
Turns out, Despres was ill on Day 1, but insisted on taking the skating drills. He won points with many for that decision, too.

That makes sense. I was figuring unless Despres were a complete idiot, he would have to recognize he'd have the opportunity to earn at least the #5 spot on the depth chart this year and come to camp in the type of shape to make that happen and set himself up for a nice raise when he's an RFA next summer.

My other takeaway from that update--Rossi is an Everton fan? Seems pretty random. I wonder if he just says that to annoy Madden (a Liverpool fan).

This was all part of Shero's grand scheme. He knew he was going to have cap issues. He knew people would flip their **** if he sent Despres down. So he asked Derpy to spend the summer at Five Guys, so he had a legitimate reason to do so. Despres then works himself into shape in WBS and eventually gets recalled once there is cap space. Fin.

I went and ate there today. As I am driving to get there i Start feeling really guilty knowing how unhealthy the food is, but I push through and eat there anyways. While I am sitting there eating my huge ass bag of fries, I am checking out the other patrons of this fine dining establishment and not one damn person is under 200 pounds. So I am feeling even worse now than I was on the drive over. Now I am sitting here watching college football and the caps preseason game one NHL network, and you happen to remind me of just how bad five guys is again. I will take this as some sort of sign that I need to stop eating there. Thanks a lot

Seems like the information was false and Despres is fine (besides being ill). Sorry for spreading such misinformation.

Doesnt help our cap woes though...

This is all based on a player not playing out of his mind or being terrible the next couple weeks.

I'm going to throw out a few assumptions:
1. Shero didn't resign Bort to a 2 year deal to lose him for nothing on waivers
2. Shero won't trade players for the sake of trading
3. Pens are only going to carry 13 forwards and 7 blue liners (like normal)

If there were to be no trades before end of camp number 3 above means that someone it out between Depres, Bort, Engo, and Nisky.
Your options would be waive Engo or demote Despres.

I don't think Despres getting top pairing (23-25) minutes a night in WBS to start the year is a bad thing. Better than having him or Bort getting no playing time in the press box. There will be injuries (letang/martin/orpik) (or trades) at some point during the season. I don't know what it would take for Kobasew to sign. Being on a PTO, I would think we could sign him for league min or so.

With the 3 assumptions above:

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Pascal Dupuis ($3.750m)
Beau Bennett ($0.900m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Matt D'Agostini ($0.550m) / Brandon Sutter ($2.067m) / Jussi Jokinen ($2.100m)
Craig Adams ($0.700m) / Dustin Jeffrey ($0.625m) / Chuck Kobasew ($0.600m)
Joe Vitale ($0.550m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Paul Martin ($5.000m) / Brooks Orpik ($3.750m)
Kris Letang ($3.500m) / Rob Scuderi ($3.375m)
Matt Niskanen ($2.300m) / Robert Bortuzzo ($0.600m)
Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
OTHER
Buried: Tanner Glass ($0.175m)

Despres should challenge Yohe to a push up contest the next time he sees him - to see just who is "out of shape".

It's the only way to deal with this type of misinformation campaign... either that or an arm wrestling competition...
