Okay, if they're going to commit this much to Letang then they need to find an assistant coach that knows how to handle defensemen.

The problem is, its just a total projection right now that it will go up. What if it doesn't?

That clearly isn't happening this year at least.

This doesn't change anything for 13-14

I know nothing changes on the 64.3M, but what is left of the 64.3M cap.

This contract isn't an issue if HCDB figures out how to develop and utilize rookies. If he continues to refuse to do so and Shero has to keep dropping $1M on 4th liners and 1.5-2M for 3rd liners because that's all DB is comfortable playing with, we will be in significantly more trouble. So, I agree with HH on the condition DB figures out how to work with rookies, which he has not proven able to do so at this point in his career.

And the projections are not ground breaking anyways. In 2 seasons with projections we will have $25 million to sign about 16 guys. In 3 seasons we will have $40 million for about 19 guys.

And remember cap produces less but more expensive UFA's. especially with the extra year to resign.
Add in little forward entry level deals/impact players and the fact we are still 3-4 years away form our d prospects being trade bait not sure how anyone thinks the cap isn't as much of an issue.

I agree. And Bylsma has yet to prove he can do this. Hopefully he can but I'm very skeptical.

Again though we have no forward prospects and PMD take longer to develop whether HCDB is a genuis or a moron.

People would complain we aren't giving the supposed forward prospects a chance if we played them on the 4th line (see: Tangradi), and then they'd complain it's hurting their development because they're playing 4th line.

Here's what I think the Pens should do with their defense heading into next year:

Top four already locked in with Letang, Despres, Martin, and Orpik.
Trade Nisky for a winger. He's on the last year of his deal and won't be back next year anyway.
Let Doumoulin, Bortuzzo, Maataa, Pouliot, and Harrington battle it out in training camp and preseason and whatever two are best they should round out your bottom pair.

If the Pens are serious about getting younger that is what they will do.

This year I'm ready for a flood of youth to fill out the ranks. I'm done with these "veteran" end of their career rentals that don't work out. We rolled the dice on Guerin and it worked, but as we can see over the past few years how lucky it really is.

Where's this perception coming from that the Pens are so old? They're not.

I dunno, I just never blindly followed a sports team and agreed with every move they make, which many people on here do.

They're not young...............not anymore. Average age 28.5 before all the trades last year.

our bottom six is primed to be mediocre for a few years. dollars and cents-wise, that's really the only downside to this deal. and that's not enough of a reason to trade letang. so he stays. i guess shero will figure something out to make our lineup deeper, but he's not getting anything from WBS as far as I can tell.

I think salaries typically go up with time and with that the cap has to.
