he's not a center?

That is the problem, why is he taking more face offs on the penalty kill than Vitale who is a better face off guy and a center?

Vitale should be playing over Glass every game, and has a lower cap hit. So for an extra $75k cap hit you can ice both Jeffrey and Vitale helping the cap issue the Pens are now stuck with.

He's taking more faceoffs than Vitale because Vitale doesn't kill penalties. I'm not trying to defend that decision, but that is the reality.

I don't remember him lining up to take face-offs, either. I think he only takes them when someone gets waived.

Only Sutter, Crosby, and Adams took more shorthanded face offs than Glass.

I understand that is the reality, I wont argue with you about that, but that is the issue. Vitale over all is a better player and should get significant more playing time in all situations, but he does not.

Glass took 0.583, repeating ofcourse, shorthanded face-offs a game. You really don't like a player for that?

I want a player out there that I can trust to win an important draw. If you are fourth on the team in short handed draws you better be doing better than 32.1%. Joe Vitale had the 2nd best fo% in the Eastern Conference. If you don't think that you can find a more effective 4th line player than Glass for less than a $1.1 million cap hit then so be it.

I just don't get the vitriol that Glass is getting. Sure, he's not a complete player but if he was, he'd be making twice as much money (at least). He's physical, decent on the penalty kill and can go in the face-off circle in a pinch when the primary center gets waived out. And his cap hit isn't so bad that if they had to waive him, they could easily without much of a cap hit.

Cooke, who was arguably our best PKer, was only 28% on PK face-offs. I don't get what the big deal is. For Glass not being a center, 32% isn't that bad, considering he is most likely taking the PK draws against teams' number one center.

Even if he was a serviceable 50% guy, you're still only talking about him winning an additional face off on the pk every 9 games or so.

One thing I wouldn't do, if I was the GM is sign another defenseman. Shero with another head scratcher. Will any of these youthful d-men ever get to actually play? Why spend all of these draft picks over the years to just let these kids rot with no NHL experience?

Probably this:

Brenden Mikkelson, 1 year, 2-way, $550,000

This year's Dylan Reese.

Bingo, with the last line. Moves like these are important. These veterans must be carefully chosen because they're the ones talking to our prospects everyday, they're the guys that help influence them as pros and if you get the right ones, they're the guys that are helping to bring out some of the talent that we have down there in those aforementioned draft picks.

I know Dallas' organization almost as well as I know Pittsburgh's and every year I marvel at the young wingers they have coming through that club located in Cedar Park, Texas. But they have no centers (a main organizational concern, as you can see in their transactions...it's been the #1A ABP released by the org. in the past 18 months or so, AIUI). So, they sign some veteran guys that can play and help develop their wingers. Not sexy names necessarily, but quality AHL talent just to augment their own talent.

Mikkelson, I'll tell you, is better than Reese certainly. Mikkelson is a legitimate #7 on most teams in the NHL, IMO. Reese is an 8 at best.

The more I see these (and I'm not bashing anyone as they are all close to reality) the more just downright frightened I am of our 3rd and 4th lines and last defensive pairing. Blech, add in not sure we can make many moves at the deadline without dumping Fleury, Neal or Martin and I'm not sure what to think.

Hope Nisky brings back a solid 3rd liner but I have no idea of his trade value.

I wasnt saying that we should trade him or anyone. Just looking at the roster and the cap space (even minus Nisky) we have no room to make deals at the deadlines unless we clear some salary. As of right now what you see is what you get from the first game to the playoffs so unless someone with a high enough salary is dumped or we can somehow trade salary/asset for salary/asset and it works in our favor, here are your 2013-14 Penguins.

Even by dumping say Jussi you will create a void in the lineup for the regular season and even prorated at the deadline not sure it will overall clear space for any real moves. Or everyone wants to trade Nisky for a solid 3rd liner but that 3rd liner has a salary to add into the lineup.

I am curious to see how this all plays out.

I read an advocation of moving Martin to have room for deadline deals. Am I wrong about that? It's not a good idea.

1. Who are the Pens bringing in that's better than Marin?
2. Why would the Pens move one of 3 d-men they have signed past this upcoming season. The D with have massive holes to fill and most likely with very young guys
3.It isn't a must to make trades at the deadline especially in a cap strangled year.

Im stating fact, not opinion. Unless something is done this is our team right now and through the playoffs. And that has to include moving Nisky for no real salary coming back if want a roster of 23. At no point did I advocate trading anyone specifically or even that we should.
