What do people think about Jiri Hudler? I haven't seen his name thrown around too much. I think that he has the speed and finishing ability to potentially to be a nice winger for Sid, and he can play either side.
Thoughts?

Hudler is a C/W...and don't get me wrong, he'd be a nice player to have...very strong offensively and defensively reliable. Problem is he'll probably cost more than $4,000,000 per year. I'd (personally) rather spend $4M on Doan...or Stoll if we want a true wing/center respectively. Plus Hudler is a pure redwing...and they don't always look as hot in other orgs/systems.

Assuming a cap of $70,300,000...
(1) Trade Paul Martin to Colorado for their 4th pick in 2012, and their 2nd pick in 2013.
(2) Sign UFA's Shane Doan (2 years, $8,000,000), Bryan Allen (3 years, $11,500,000), and Jay McClement (2 years, $3,500,000).
(3) Re-sign Sid Crosby (10 years, $90,000,000), and Jordan Staal (5 years, $27,500,000).
LW Kunitz | C Malkin | RW Neal
LW Doan ($4,000,000) | C Crosby (UFA in 2013 - $9,000,000) | RW Staal (UFA in 2013 - $5,500,000)
LW Dupuis (UFA in 2013) | C McClement ($1,750,000) | RW Kennedy (RFA in 2013)
LW Cooke (UFA in 2013) | C Vitale | RW Tangradi ($875,000)
x Adams (UFA in 2013)
Letang | Allen ($3,833,333)
Orpik | Michalek
Niskanen ($2,000,000) | Despres
x Engellend (UFA in 2013)
Fleury
Vokoun
Total of $68,765,000 against the cap, leaving $1,535,000 free.
$61,973,333 against the cap in 2013-14, with (4) forwards, and (1) defenseman to sign/replace. All four forwards are bottom-6 skaters (Dupuis, Kennedy, Cooke, Adams), and the lone defenseman is Engellend. That leaves $7,000,000 +/- (after adding in Crosby and Staal's salary increases) to sign those (5) players if the cap stays the same. Should leave plenty of room to re-up Malkin for the start of the 2014-15 season.
McClement was offered 3 years at 2.5 to stay in Denver, why would he sign in Pittsburgh for 1.75? He's one of the more dependable guys in the league and I would love to have him on the Pens, but he's going to be looking for something more like 3 mill a season.

He was? Huh...I didn't see that anywhere. Obviously then...no, he wouldn't sign here for 1.75M.

Bio-clocks rolling...and (not that we are) but he's not knocking on the door of a championship in PHX. I'm sure lots of teams will be contacting him @ 12:00 on July 1.

Are the Pens really asking about Setoguchi?

TIOPS suggested a Setoguchi trade that would involve Martin.

Oddly enough...I suggested it over a month ago.

Not surprising that they made a qualifying offer to Niskanen, but I'm not sure exactly how he projects going forward. I don't see him in the top 4.

Why does that matter? He's a great option for the "3rd pairing".

Depending on other factors...and opinions...his salary is the main concern. He's not exactly the most physical player either, which many feel is something our d-core sorely lacks.
All in all...while waiting to see how eveything else shakes down...I'm glad he was tendered the offer. He earned it with strong and smart play last season!

That's really what I was getting at. I don't know how much we can spend in a long term deal on a guy who doesn't factor in the Top 4.

I agree. I think people are a little TOO excited about him. His swing status between top 4 and bottom pairing actually makes him more expendable in my eyes.

I am pretty sure Niskanen in a few years would be top 4 on most teams.

If we have add a physical defenseman and pencil him into the 5-6 pairing with Niskanen. Then move Despres into a Top 4 role I'm confident our blueline will be just fine. I'd like to add a PP QB, but I just don't see that available unless you make a trade.
If you can add Setoguchi for Martin then our Top 9 is pretty much set.
I just don't see us being very active at all in free agency.

Well, Martin for Setoguchi is no certainty.

I know it isn't, but its how I would attempt to change things.
Malkin/Crosby/Neal
Kunitz/Staal/Setoguchi
Dupuis/UFA/Kennedy
Cooke/Adams/Tangradi
UFA: Gaustad or Stoll type player
Extras: Jeffery/Vitale
Letang/Michalek
Orpik/Despres
Niskanen/UFA
Extras: Engellend/Lovejoy
The Pens have will have roughly 6M to sign 2 UFA's (3rd line C, 5/6 Defenseman)

You'd put Malkin on the wing before putting Staal or Sid on the wing?

Just let Lovejoy ride the waivers (and possibly get snatched up)...Strait and/or Bortuzzo would be better suited...or you could even try to go after Bryan Allen or Gill to give you that big-bodied defender that can push people around in front of Fleury/Vokoun. Send Jeffrey up to MINNY along with Martin to help seal the deal. Sign McClement for that third line C job...we certainly don't need more offense at the sacrifice of D...and we could pay him 2M-2.25M for 2-3 years to really give us a defensive anchor on the bottom-6. Make Tangradi earn it for winger depth. I'd also look at a couple bottom-line bangers in Tootoo, Asham, or Crabb...though Tootoo would cost the most.
Also, regarding Setoguchi...while I still think Minny won't go for it...I like the idea because Devin has a real nice and underrated physical side to his game...he can pack a punch when he wants to. He's a bit of primadonna and diver, but...well, anyway...
Also...just for the fun of it...I want to re-arrange your lines...
Kunitz | Malkin | Neal
Staal | Crosby | Setoguchi
Cooke | McClement | Dupuis
Tangradi/Asham | Vitale | Kennedy
x Adams
Letang | Allen (Vokoun will help lure him in

)
Orpik | Michalek
Niskanen | Despres
Engellend | Bortuzzo/Strait

I can't stomach playing a great 2 way player like Staal on wing.
