Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- A couple of all-too-familiar nemeses combined to hand the New Jersey Devils just their second loss in 11 games.

Alexei Kovalev recorded a hat trick in his first game in nearly a month and Aleksey Morozov collected two goals and two assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins ended a three-game winless streak with a 5-1 victory over the Devils.

Kovalev missed 13 games following knee surgery but did not miss a beat in his first action since October 14. He scored his first three goals of the season, tying it midway through the second period and extending the Penguins' lead to 3-1 midway through the third.

After Morozov got his second goal of the night, Kovalev scored a shorthanded goal into an empty net with 89 seconds remaining to complete his seventh career hat trick and second against New Jersey.

"I dreamed about coming back like that and it happened, but you never expect it," Kovalev said. "In the first period, it seemed like I had no chance. But in the second and third, I tried to do things differently."

Morozov's numbers against the Devils are even more impressive. The career-best four-point night gave him 10 goals and 11 assists in 20 games vs. New Jersey. The 24-year-old Russian has just 33 goals and 49 assists in 274 games against the rest of the NHL.

"I don't know what to tell you. Whenever I play against (Martin Brodeur), the puck just comes to me," Morozov said. "I get good chances and they just seem to go in."

"He is ridiculous," Kovalev said of his occasional linemate. "We were joking about it before the game. We tell him to think he is playing Brodeur every night. The guy just always scores on him."

The Devils had a 10-3 edge in shots in a scoreless first period and broke on top on Jason Arnott's power-play goal 9:07 into the second. Patrik Elias poked a rebound of Petr Sykora's shot across the crease to Arnott, who flipped it by goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin from the doorstep.

But it was all Pittsburgh thereafter.

Kovalev tied it 95 seconds later, putting a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle into the top right corner of the net.

Morozov put the Penguins on top with nine seconds left in the period. Off a goalmouth scramble, he flipped a shot from above the crease over Brodeur for his third goal of the season.

Kovalev struck again 9:56 into the third. Robert Lang drew two defenders as he carried into the Devils' zone, then dished to Kovalev, who beat Brodeur to the stick side from the top of the right circle.

"Nobody expected him to be in the lineup, then we look up and see him in warmups. So we probably weren't ready," Brodeur said. "He got open, had some great chances and buried two."

"All of a sudden, bang, we make two mistakes by not getting the puck in deep and the next thing you know, they're playing really well," New Jersey coach Larry Robinson added. "And then you look up and you're down by two."

Morozov made it 4-1 on the power play just 93 seconds later, lifting a short backhander over Brodeur's left shoulder.

"He is just the type of guy who has my number," Brodeur said. "He puts the puck in the net and sometimes I don't even know it's in the net until I see the replay because they are tap-ins and kick-in junk around the net. It's hard because he is not on the top line and he just gets to roam around."

Mario Lemieux and rookie Kris Beech each had a pair of assists for Pittsburgh, which climbed out of the Atlantic Division cellar, two points ahead of New Jersey.

"It is important to get our big guys back and get back into a groove," Lemieux said.

Devils left wing Sergei Brylin left with a knee injury in the first period after he was rammed into the boards by Penguins defenseman Darius Kasparaitis.

"I think Brylin is fine, it is more of a bruise than anything," Robinson said. "The hit was borderline. If you are not ready and you don't know Kasper by now, you'll never know. He looks for hits. That's how he made his reputation."
