Game Story

DETROIT (Ticker) -- There are nine Czechs on the Pittsburgh Penguins' roster. Garth Snow isn't one of them. But he did a pretty good impression of one tonight.

Snow came up with back-to-back spectacular saves in the waning moments after rookie Toby Petersen scored the go-ahead goal with 15:27 remaining as the Penguins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Making his ninth straight start, Snow kicked out his right skate to stop Brendan Shanahan's rebound attempt with 1:35 remaining. Moments later, while lying on his back on the ice, Snow made like Dominik Hasek and thrust his right leg in the air to get a piece of Steve Yzerman's shot from the left faceoff circle.

"I tried to just throw my pads," Snow said. "I knew he could see the whole top half (of the net). You just kind of anticipate. I extended my right leg and then Shanahan hit it. I went splits to Yzerman and I was kicking the splits. I did a two-pad kind of rollover. It wasn't technically a sound move, but it worked in a desperate situation."

The Red Wings pulled goaltender Chris Osgood for an extra attacker in the final minute and nearly tied it when Sergei Fedorov's blast deflected off the right goalpost with 43 seconds left.

"Garth really shut the door. He got a little help from the pipe on the shot at the end," Petersen said. "My heart was ticking pretty hard then. I'm glad we were able to pull it off at the end."

Detroit's comeback attempt fizzled five seconds later, when right wing Darren McCarty was penalized for elbowing.

Snow made 34 saves to help the Penguins improve to 8-4-2-1 on the road. They did not get their eighth road win last season until February 19.

"Probably the biggest difference is we play a lot of games back-to-back and the first one, we usually play on the road," Pittsburgh captain Jaromir Jagr said. "The second one, we go home and it looks like we don't have enough energy to play the second game."

Peterson, a 1998 ninth-round draft pick, was playing his fourth NHL game. He took a pass from Jagr, skated down through the right circle and put a shot through Osgood's pads for his first career goal.

"I was just trying to keep (Osgood) honest," Petersen said. "I didn't want to look right at him and let him set up, so I kind of looked to the left even though there was really nobody over there. And then I threw it through his legs. That all happened so fast. I'm just thinking, `I've got to get it to the net and get a goal.'

"It's such a thrill to have that first goal be the game-winner, and especially to come from Jaromir Jagr."

The assist was Jagr's first point in four games.

"He was playing very well, but before, he didn't take many shots. The first time he tried to shoot, he scored," Jagr said of the 22-year-old rookie. "I'm glad for him, very happy for him."

Vyacheslav Kozlov and Shanahan scored power-play goals for the Red Wings, who have lost three of their last four games.

"They have so many skilled players, you can't go 1-on-1 against them. They're difficult to play defense against because you never know what to expect," Osgood said. "We worked hard but got some tough penalties that took away our momentum. We're a little snakebit right now."

Penguins coach Ivan Hlinka was not with the team after returning to the Czech Republic following the death of his father. Assistants Rick Kehoe and Randy Hillier ran the team in his absence.

"This was a big win, especially coming off a back-to-back," Snow said. "We didn't play a smart game in Toronto. Tonight we wanted to redeem ourselves, and we did."

Kozlov scored the only goal of the first period, but Kip Miller tied it on the power play 7:45 into the second and defenseman Michal Rozsival put Pittsburgh in front at 13:12 with his first goal in 50 games since January 27.

Yzerman tied it again just over two minutes later, but Martin Straka broke the deadlock 38 seconds thereafter for the Penguins, beating Osgood on a breakaway for his ninth goal.

The Red Wings got the equalizer during a two-man advantage with 2:26 left in the second period as Shanahan put home a rebound with teammate Tomas Holmstrom draped over Snow in the crease.

Snow made 33 saves while Osgood stopped 26 shots in a losing cause.

"This could be a confidence builder for him," Shanahan said of the Red Wings goalie. "I thought he played better tonight even than he did the other night, when he allowed one goal. We're disappointed it's a loss, but that's one positive we can take out of it -- Ozzie played very well."
