Game Story

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Kip Miller recorded his first two-goal game in almost eight years, Martin Straka collected two goals and two assists and Robert Lang also scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins outlasted the Florida Panthers, 7-4.

Miller, who entered the contest with only 15 goals in 118 NHL games over parts of nine seasons with six teams, scored midway through the opening period. His second tally came at 10:46 of the middle period and was the first of four straight goals by Pittsburgh in a 6:01 span.

Miller's only other multi-goal game came on March 2nd, 1991, for the Quebec Nordiques.

"I think we were throwing a lot of stuff at the net. I'm going at the net hard," he said. "It's got to be tough on a goalie. We hadn't score many goals in a while. They were bound to go in sometime."

Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who recorded their highest offensive output since a 7-6 overtime victory against Vancouver on November 1st, 1997. Pittsburgh has lost just once in its last eight home games (5-1-2).

"I thought it took us a while to get on track. They got the lead. I don't know if that's a horrible thing when you haven't played for four days," Penguins coach Kevin Constantine said. "Generally it's tough to play when you have more than two days off. We thought if we could hang in there in the beginning, we thought we'd get better as the game went on and I think that kind of helped."

Radek Dvorak scored twice and Mark Parrish added a goal and an assist for Florida, which had won four of its last five contets.

The game featured plenty of rough stuff. Referee Dan O'Halloran handed out eight fighting majors, four misconducts and four game misconducts.

"I was real proud of our team. We were team-tough, we all hung in there," said Constantine. "It's what leads up to it that's very disappointing. There was a slash on (Alexei) Kovalev where a guy breaks his stick over him and it's not called. That's two games in a row where guys have broken their sticks over our players' bodies and no calls. I am proud of the way the team stuck up for each other."

Penguins defenseman Jeff Serowik suffered a concussion and needed 14 stitches to close a cut over his left eye following a hit from Florida's Peter Worrell.

"Worrell made the hit on Serowik. I think it's part of my job," Pittsburgh's Tyler Wright said. "I'm not going to knock anybody out but I want to stand up for my teammates. We had all five guys fighting, we showed togetherness as a team. We'll win as a team, lose as a team and fight as a team."

Lang scored his 12th goal of the season just 13 seconds after Miller's second tally for a 3-1 lead. Straka deflected Jiri Slegr's left point blast by Kirk McLean with 4:28 left in the second period and Lang completed his second career two-goal game 75 seconds later, making it 5-1.

But the Panthers scored two shorthanded goals 40 seconds apart to pull within 5-3. Dvorak got his sixth of the season and Viktor Kozlov netted his seventh at 2:47.

But Straka's second goal of the game and 17th of the season made it 6-3 less than two minutes later. Jagr and Parrish completed the scoring.

Peter Skudra made 26 saves for Pittsburgh, while McLean stopped 30 shots.
