GAME RECAP

Petr Nedved scored four goals for his first career hat trick and Dave McLlwain tallied his first two goals of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins moved within one point of the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 9-4 rout of the Winnipeg Jets.

Sergei Zubov had a pair of goals and Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux each set up four goals for the Penguins, who have won three of their last four games to pull within one point of the conference-leading New York Rangers. Pittsburgh swept the season series and has won eight of its last nine home games against Winnipeg.

"I think the biggest thing tonight was we got off to a bit of a jump start," Penguins coach Eddie Johnston said. "I think you're always nervous when you juggle the lines a little. You're not sure if they're going to work out. They seemed to work tonight.

"We asked Nedved to shoot from anyplace and I think he got two or three from behind the net," Johnston said. "He's been snake-bitten a little bit, so I think it's kind of nice. I didn't realize it was his first career hat trick and when you get four goals in one game that's quite a chore."

Jim McKenzie scored a pair of third-period goals for the Jets, who had their season-high five-game winning streak snapped. Winnipeg remains tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for seventh place in the Western Conference.

"We didn't play very well, that's indicated by the score," Jets coach Terry Simpson said. "We didn't get any good coverage in our end, they just kept going to the net and it kept going in. That is the way it goes some nights. They got a couple of goals on blown coverage. When you get down 3-0, it's tough to come back under any circumstances."

Nikolai Khabibulin was pulled for the second straight game. He was yanked 6:33 into the second period after surrendering five goals on 16 shots. He was replaced by Dominic Roussel.

McLlwain's first goal of the game and first of the season 2:52 into the game gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. McLlwain played 90 games with the Penguins between 1987 and 1989.

Nedved scored the first of his three goals 2:04 later, making it 2-0.

Zubov's eighth goal, a power-play tally with 34 seconds left in the first period, extended the lead to 3-0.

Nedved's second of the game and 32nd of the season 59 seconds into the second period made it 4-0. McLlwain tallied his second of the game at the 6:33 mark, before Olczyk's 24th of the season less than four minutes later finally got the Jets on the board.

Joe Dziedzic's fourth goal 21 seconds later made it 5-1 and Nedved completed his hat trick with 25 seconds left in the period for a 6-1 advantage.

Nedved completed his four-goal game with 7:33 remaining.

"I don't even think he (Roussel) moved because I put it right back on him and went in, I was more suprised than him," Nedved said. "I've had fun here since the beginning of the season. This has got to be the best season I've ever had. Playing with these guys the way I've been playing, it's just like the basketball players when they say 'they're in the zone,' that was me tonight."

Tom Barrasso stopped 37 of 41 shots for the Penguins, who killed off all six Winnipeg power plays.
