GAME RECAP

Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr each scored their second goals of the game and 50th of the season 3:46 apart in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins won their sixth straight home game, 5-4, over the Hartford Whalers.

Lemieux notched his 50th goal in his 50th game of the season, accomplishing the feat for the third time personally and the 11th time in N-H-L history. Lemieux scored 50 by his 44th game in the 1988-89 season and did it in his 48th game of the 1992-93 campaign.

"We practiced a little bit on the power play this week," Lemieux said. "It was just a matter of moving the guys around and getting a different look. That's what happened tonight, I was on the other side a couple of times and every tiume we do that it's tough to defend."

Lemieux and Jagr become the second pair of teammates to score their 50th goals in the same game. Lemieux and Kevin Stevens accomplished the feat March 21st, 1993 against Edmonton in a neutral site game in Cleveland.

"To have two guys score 50 goals, to do it on the same night was a lot of fun," Lemieux said. "I just found out earlier that a couple of years ago Kevin and I did it."

Nelson Emerson's 21st goal 3:08 into the third period gave the Whalers a 4-3 lead, but Lemieux tallied his second goal of the game and 50th of the season, a power-play marker 2:29 later, to tie it.

Jagr also scored on the power play, at the 9:23 mark to give the Penguins the lead for good. He skated through the left circle and faked a pass before putting a wrist shot past goaltender Sean Burke's stick side from 10-feet out.

Jagr, who has 10 game-winning goals this season, scored 50 goals for the first time in his career. He becomes the first Czech-born player in the N-H-L to reach the 50-goal mark.

Sergei Zubov had three assists and Bryan Smolinksi and Ron Francis each set up a pair of goals for Pittsburgh, which is 5-2-1 in its last eight games overall. The Penguins, who are 3-0-1 against the Whalers this season, have won five in a row at home since a 5-2 loss to Colorado on January 16th.

"We got a wake-up call after the first period," Penguins coach Eddie Johnston said. "Thank goodness for Kenny (Wregget), they came out flying and he kept us in the game. Our power play was finally the difference in a game. I don't know what was wrong in the first period, it was in our backyard and we do have a big road trip coming up."

Johston was asked about having two players of the caliber of Lemieux and Jagr on his team.

"It is fortunate, any time you have the two best players in the game sitting on your bench, that's pretty good," he said. "The big players come to play in big games. I don't think there will be two players who can touch these two guys."

Brendan Shanahan recorded his seventh career hat trick for the Whalers, who dropped to 7-2 in their last nine games. Hartord remains two points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"I thought we played really hard and had some great chances to score," Whalers coach Paul Maurice said. "We hit some posts and got ourselves caught in the box too often. Shanahan was shooting them from all over, he certainly had the shot going. We've been playing better, it's a good road game for us, we generated a lot of scoring chances."

Lemieux scored his first goal of the game, a power-play tally 7:49 into the first period, to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. But Shanahan scored two goals 3:29 apart -- his 28th and 29th of the season -- to give the Whalers a 2-1 lead after one period.

Markus Naslund netted his 17th goal, 58 seconds into the middle period, and Jagr's first of the game, a power-play marker at the 6:22 mark, gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 edge.

Shanahan completed his first hat trick of the season with 5:48 left in the second period when he banged in Robert Kron's cross-crease pass on the power play.
