GAME RECAP

Jaromir Jagr's second goal of the game, with 2:28 left in regulation, lifted Pittsburgh into a 6-6 tie with the Colorado Avalanche.

Jagr's goal came 81 seconds after Joe Sakic had scored his second goal of the game, giving Colorado a 6-5 lead with 3:49 to play in the third period.

Jagr came in alone and was able to power a shot past Colorado goalie Stephane Fiset, who entered the game at the 2:25 mark of the second period in relief of starting netminder Jocelyn Thibault.

Mario Lemieux, playing his second game after a 17-month absence, added two goals and an assist. He has two goals and five assists in Pittsburgh's first two games.

"It was important for me to get off to a good start this season," Lemieux said. "And knowing that I can score goals again, I felt much better in the game, especially early in the game tonight. I made some good plays and finally scored a couple of goals."

Sakic finished with two goals and two assists for the Avalanche, who played their third game in four days. Adam Deadmarsh scored twice in the second period for Colorado.

The teams combined for three shots in the overtime. Pittsburgh goalie Ken Wregget made 40 saves as Colorado outshot the Penguins, 46-26.

"For most of the game, we had the game well in hand," Colorado coach Marc Crawford said. "We really dominated the play, especially 5-on-5. Against this team, you know their power play is one of the strongest in the league. When you have Lemieux, Jagr anmd Francis -- three of the top five or six forwards in the league on the power play -- and you throw in Zubov and Sandstrom, that's a pretty awesome power play."

Colorado jumped out to a 2-0 lead on power-play goals by Sakic and Owen Nolan just less than two minutes apart midway through the first period. Pittsburgh closed the gap to 2-1 with 2:38 left in the first period on Ron Francis' power-play marker.

Adam Foote gave the Avalanche a 3-1 lead 35 seconds into the middle period before Pittsburgh reeled off three straight goals to make it 4-3. Tomas Sandstrom and Lemieux netted power-play goals 15 seconds apart to tie the game 2:25 into the second period. The Penguins had a 5-on-3 advantage after Craig Wolanin and Foote were whistled for penalties 12 seconds apart.

Jagr's first goal of the game gave Pittsburgh its only lead before Deadmarsh scored two goals 5:36 apart to give Colorado a 5-4 lead with 3:33 to play in the second period.

Lemieux's second goal of the game, a power-play marker with 45 seconds remaining in the second period, tied the game 5-5.

Pittsburgh finished 4-of-8 on the power play and has now converted 8-of-15 chances with the man-advantage this season (53.3 per cent). Colorado was 2-of-7 on the power play.

"It's frustrating to let them get back in the game by power play," Crawford added. "We really responded well in the third by battling hard and not giving them any power-play goals at least in the third."
