GAME RECAP

Mario Lemieux had four assists in his first game in 17 months and Ron Francis and Tomas Sandstrom had two goals apiece as the Pittsburgh Penguins bombed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 8-3.

Lemieux, who sat out all of last year's shortened season building up strength in his back after undergoing radiation treatments for Hodgkins' disease, assisted on Francis' first goal of the game, a power-play marker that made it 1-1 just over seven minutes into the contest.

Petr Nedved, acquired in the off-season from the New York Rangers in a four-player deal, gave Pittsburgh the lead for good with an unassisted goal with 6:13 left in the first period for a 3-2 Penguins lead.

Nedved poke-checked the puck away from Toronto's Doug Gilmour in the Maple Leafs zone before squeezing off a quick wrist shot from the left circle that beat Felix Potvin.

Pittsburgh capped a four-goal first period when Jaromir Jagr took a feed from Francis and beat Potvin to make it 4-2.

Toronto took a 1-0 lead 48 seconds into the contest when Zdenek Nedved, who is not related to Petr, scored his first-ever N-H-L goal.

After Francis' goal, Mats Sundin scored the first of his two tallies, giving Toronto a 2-1 lead with 9:45 left in the first period. Richard Park tallied the Penguins' equalizer on a short-handed marker with exactly seven minutes left, going end-to-end on a rush before ripping a 15-foot slap shot past Potvin.

After Jagr's goal made it 4-2 with 1:34 to play in the first period, Sundin scored his second goal 23 seconds later, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Francis netted his second goal of the game 5:40 into the second period to make it 5-3. Pittsburgh's power-play unit was sparked by the return of Lemieux, converting 4-of-7 man-advantage opportunities.

Sergei Zubov, acquired with Nedved from the New York Rangers, added a short-handed goal with 11:10 left in the second period to make it 6-3. Lemieux then assisted on both of Sandstrom's power-play markers to cap the scoring.

Francis added two assists and Zubov netted a goal and two assists and Jagr had a goal and two assists as Pittsburgh finished with four unanswered goals. Penguins goalie Tom Barrasso made 21 saves over the final 41:11.

Gilmour had two assists for the Maple Leafs.
